Eric Favre is a Swiss engineer, best known for inventing the Nespresso system in 1976, the first single-serve coffee container.

Favre graduated from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne [1] and joined Nestle in 1975. [2]

In 1976, Favre, an employee of Nestlé, invented, patented and introduced the Nespresso system. [3] Favre was the first president of Nespresso. [4]

In 1991, Favre launched Monodor (Now renamed as MOCOFFEE), a new patented capsule system that did not use aluminium. The patents are used under license by Lavazza and Migros. [5]

In 2014, Favre received a Coffee Leaders Lifetime Achievement Award at the GCR Leaders Symposium in Singapore. [5]

Michael Tompsett is a British-born physicist, engineer, and inventor, and the founder director of the US software company TheraManager. Tompsett invented CCD imagers and designed and built the first ever video camera with a solid-state (CCD) sensor. Tompsett received the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering in 2017, with Eric Fossum, George Smith, and Nobukazu Teranishi. Tompsett has also received two other lifetime awards; the New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame 2010 Pioneer Award, and the 2012 IEEE Edison Medal. The thermal-imaging camera tube developed from his invention also earned a Queen's Award in 1987.

The European Inventor Award, are presented annually by the European Patent Office, sometimes supported by the respective Presidency of the Council of the European Union and by the European Commission, to inventors who have made a significant contribution to innovation, economy and society, predominantly in Europe. Inventions from all technological fields are considered for this award. The winners in each category are presented with an award shaped like a sail. There is no cash prize associated with the award, however there is a cash prize for all 3 of the Young Inventors Prize finalists.

BabyNes is a beverage machine by Nestlé that makes infant formula from single-use capsules, similar to Nestlé's Nespresso. The product was designed to recreate Nespresso's success with coffee in the baby formula industry. It was first introduced in Switzerland on May 25, 2011. The Wall Street Journal referred to Nespresso as Nestlé's fastest growing brand in 2011 after its sales rose by 20% in 2010 and it brought a number of legal actions against competitors. Nestlé reported strong sales for the product in late 2011.

Nestlé Nespresso S.A., trading as Nespresso, is an operating unit of the Nestlé Group, based in Lausanne, Switzerland. Nespresso machines brew espresso and coffee from coffee capsules, a type of pre-apportioned single-use container, or reusable capsules (pods), of ground coffee beans, sometimes with added flavorings. Once inserted into a machine, the capsules are pierced and processed, water is then forced against a heating element at high pressure meaning that only the quantity for a single cup is warmed. By 2011 Nespresso had annual sales in excess of 3 billion Swiss francs. The word Nespresso is a portmanteau of "Nestlé" and "Espresso", a common mechanic used across other Nestlé brands.
