He played college football for the BYU Cougars, earning consensus All-American honors in 2009. He was selected by the Ravens in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL draft. After two strong seasons in the National Football League (NFL), Pitta suffered a hip injury in 2013 and played only occasionally until 2016, when he set a career high in receiving yards. A further injury in 2017 ended his career.

He played college football for the Toledo Rockets and was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft. He has also played for the Carolina Panthers and Houston Texans.
