After 2021, Reed worked as a transgender rights blogger. She focuses on legislation that impacts LGBT, and often specifically transgender, people. [3] [6] In addition to her blog, Reed has written for Harper's Bazaar , [7] the Los Angeles Blade , [8] and other publications. [9] In 2024, she won the NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists Jeanne Córdova award. [10]

In 2019, Reed created a map of informed consent clinics to help trans people find healthcare providers. [4] In 2021, her data was used by anti-trans activists to harass healthcare providers on the list. [11] [12]

In 2023, Reed published a map tracking US states that had the most and least legislative protection for transgender individuals. She has updated the map as new laws are proposed and passed. [13] [14]

Reed is transgender. [4] She began researching gender transition when she was 13. [4] However, she did not pursue it until her early 30s, as she did not know how to access healthcare options. [4] [16]

In 2022, Reed started a long-distance relationship with Montana state representative Zooey Zephyr. [18] They were engaged in May 2023. [19] Earlier that month, the couple was targeted in failed swatting attempts. Reed credited local police for stopping the incident. [17] [20] In June 2023, the Associated Press referred to Reed and Zephyr as "prominent figures in the world of LGBTQ+ advocacy," despite being unknown just a few months before. [18]

The rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people in the United States are among the most advanced in the world, with public opinion and jurisprudence changing significantly since the late 1980s.

In the United States, the rights of transgender people vary considerably by jurisdiction. In recent decades, there has been an expansion of federal, state, and local laws and rulings to protect transgender Americans; however, many rights remain unprotected, and some rights are being eroded. Since 2020, there has been a national movement by conservative/right-wing politicians and organizations to target transgender rights. There has been a steady increase in the number of anti-transgender bills introduced each year, especially in Republican-led states.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people in the U.S. state of Tennessee may experience some legal challenges that non-LGBTQ residents do not. Hodges on June 26, 2015.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people in the U.S. state of Montana may face some legal challenges not experienced by non-LGBTQ residents. Same-sex sexual activity has been legal in Montana since 1997. Same-sex couples and families headed by same-sex couples are eligible for all of the protections available to opposite-sex married couples, as same-sex marriage has been recognized since November 2014. State statutes do not address discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity; however, the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Bostock v. Clayton County established that employment discrimination against LGBTQ people is illegal under federal law. A number of cities also provide protections in housing and public accommodations.

TERF (acronym) Acronym for trans-exclusionary radical feminist

TERF is an acronym for trans-exclusionary radical feminist. First recorded in 2008, the term TERF was originally used to distinguish transgender-inclusive feminists from a group of radical feminists who reject the position that trans women are women, reject the inclusion of trans women in women's spaces, and oppose transgender rights legislation. Trans-inclusive feminists assert that these ideas and positions are transphobic and discriminatory towards transgender people. The use of the term TERF has since broadened to include reference to people with trans-exclusionary views who are not necessarily involved with radical feminism. In the 2020s, the term "trans-exclusionary radical feminism" is used synonymously with or overlaps with "gender-critical feminism".

Genspect is an international group founded in June 2021 by psychotherapist Stella O'Malley that has been described as gender-critical. Genspect opposes gender-affirming care, as well as social and medical transition for transgender people. Genspect opposes allowing transgender people under 25 years old to transition, and opposes laws that would ban conversion therapy on the basis of gender identity. Genspect also endorses the unproven concept of rapid-onset gender dysphoria (ROGD), which proposes a subclass of gender dysphoria caused by peer influence and social contagion. ROGD has been rejected by major medical organisations due to its lack of evidence and likelihood to cause harm by stigmatizing gender-affirming care.
