Marshall University is a public research university in Huntington, West Virginia. It was founded in 1837 and is named after John Marshall, the fourth Chief Justice of the United States.
Northeast Texas is a region in the northeast corner of the U.S. state of Texas. It is geographically centered on two metropolitan areas strung along Interstate 20: Tyler in the west and Longview/Marshall to the east. West Virginia State University (WVSU) is a public, historically black, state university founded in 1891 in Institute, West Virginia. In the Charleston-metro area, the school is usually referred to simply as "STATE", " WVSU" or "West Virginia State". It is one of the original 19 land-grant colleges and universities established by the second Morrill Act of 1890, which evolved as a diverse and inclusive campus. The University is a member-school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. Following desegregation, WVSU's student population slowly became more white than black. As of 2017, WSVU is 75% white and only 8% African-American.

It was founded in 1938 to allow students the opportunity to obtain associate degrees, certificates and diplomas as well as provide vocational and technical training. The courses offered range from Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, business, education, health-related courses, information technology and a range of industrial technology degrees among others.
The College of the Marshall Islands (CMI) is a regionally accredited autonomous community college offering associate degree programs in liberal arts and sciences, business and information technology, elementary education, and nursing. It also offers high school equivalency, community extension, student development, and certificate programs. The College primarily serves students from within the Micronesian region and is designated as the national post-secondary institution for the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), as enacted in RMI PL 1992-13, The College of the Marshall Islands Act.

The college was independently accredited February 8, 2005, by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Although newly founded and named, the college's origins span more than one hundred thirty years of service to West Virginia through its two parent institutions, Bluefield State College and Glenville State College.

West Virginia Community and Technical College System is a statewide system of nine regional community colleges serving the state of West Virginia. It was created to bring uniformity to the state's system of community colleges. Previously some area had schools that were a part of large universities, others a part of small colleges, and others were stand alone. There also was a great overlap between different community colleges and between the community colleges and the state universities in the same areas. The system tries to define the programmatic distinctions between the community college and the state universities, and the geographic service area of each community college.

Founded in 1974, it has the second largest enrollment of the 10 Community and Technical Colleges that make up the West Virginia Community and Technical College System. The college serves 13 counties in North Central West Virginia with classes offered at more than 15 locations throughout the region. Its headquarters is located in Fairmont, West Virginia. The student/faculty ratio is 17:1.
