Espiritu Joven

Espiritu Joven is a Catholic youth movement in Cuba, focused on foreign Catholic medical students. Espiritu Joven was origined by a Catholic monk, Sr. Cristina S.M and three medical students in ELAM (Escuela Latino Americana de Medicina), in Havana, Cuba, in 1999. Now, after 13 years, with seven branches and more than 300 participants, the movement is enrolling throughout Cuba.[ citation needed ]

History

The Espiritu Joven, has started with its home school, ELAM, in 1999, October 27, the Feast of St. Jude. When in 1999, the ELAM has started, catholic students from Latin American countries faced problems in gathering and doing their prayer activities in week days, other than Sunday masses, to solve these problems with the Colombian origin catholic monk Sr. Cristina and three Catholic students from Latin America have started the movement in the day of St.Jude in October 27. From that day up to now the Espiritu Joven is doing its weekly activities in ELAM.

Presence outside the ELAM

The Espiritu Joven has started its presence outside of the ELAM in 2001, when the first badge students went to provinces with the process of decentralization. From 2001, Espiritu Joven is permanently having its branches all over Cuba. Cuban provinces such as, Pinar del Rio, Villa Clara, Santiago de Cuba and Las Tunas have branches other than the capital, Havana. In Havana medical faculties other than ELAM, Salvador Allende and Vitoria de Giron have their branches.

Coordination

The Coordination and spiritual direction of Espiritu Joven, depends on the branch. All branches have their own coordination and the spiritual direction. In ELAM, the Home Branch, Sr. Maria Cristina Palacio S.M., the founder of Espiritu Joven, acting as a spiritual guide from 1999 with Sr. Gabriela Ines from 2012. In the ELAM, the coordination is having by an eight members committee, which changes every year.

Presence of non-Spanish speakers

From 2010, when the non=Spanish speakers started to come to ELAM in a big quantity, Espiritu Joven opened for them also, especially in the coordination. In 2012, Espritu Joven started its services in English, other than Spanish, for the English speakers in ELAM.

Ramón Emeterio Betances Puerto Rican nationalist

Ramón Emeterio Betances y Alacán was a Puerto Rican independence advocate and medical doctor. He was the primary instigator of the Grito de Lares revolution and is considered to be the father of the Puerto Rican independence movement. Since the Grito galvanized a burgeoning nationalist movement among Puerto Ricans, Betances is also considered "El Padre de la Patria". Because of his charitable deeds for people in need, he also became known as "El Padre de los Pobres".

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School is a private, Catholic, all-male, preparatory school run by the Antilles Province of the Society of Jesus in Tamiami, unincorporated Miami-Dade County, Florida, operated by the Society of Jesus. Asociación de Scouts de Cuba

The Asociación de Scouts de Cuba was the national Scouting organization of Cuba from 1927 to 1961. Scouting in Cuba started in 1914, in 1927 the ASC was founded and became a member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement the same year and was suspended from WOSM membership in 1961. Islam is one of the smallest minority faiths in Cuba. According to a 2011 Pew Research Center report, there were then 10,000 Muslims in Cuba who constitute 0.1% of the population. As of 2012, most of the 10,000 Cuban Muslims were converts to the religion.

Cuba's prevailing religion is Christianity, primarily Roman Catholicism, although in some instances it is profoundly modified and influenced through syncretism. A common syncretic religion is Santería, which combined the Yoruba religion of the African slaves with Catholicism and some Native American strands; it shows similarities to Brazilian Umbanda and has been receiving a degree of official support. The Roman Catholic Church estimates that 60 percent of the population is Catholic, but only 5% of that 60% attends mass regularly, while independent sources estimate that as few 1.5% of the population does so. In a survey sponsored by Univision, 44% of Cubans said they were not religious and 9% did not give an answer while only 34% said they were Christian.

Sandino is a municipality and town in the Pinar del Río Province of Cuba. The town is located close to the coast and as such, fishing is the main economic resource of this place. It is also the gateway to the Guanahacabibes Peninsula, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

María Magdalena Campos-Pons is a Cuban-born artist based in Nashville, Tennessee. Campos-Pons works primarily in photography, performance, audiovisual media, and sculpture. She is considered a "key figure" among Cuban artists who found their voice in a post-revolutionary Cuba. Her art deals with themes of Cuban culture, gender and sexuality, multicultural identity as well as interracial family (Cuban-American), and religion/spirituality.

After the 1959 Cuban Revolution, Cuba established a programme to send its medical personnel overseas, particularly to Latin America, Africa and Oceania, and to bring medical students and patients to Cuba for training and treatment respectively. In 2007, Cuba had 42,000 workers in international collaborations in 103 different countries, of whom more than 30,000 were health personnel, including at least 19,000 physicians. Cuba provides more medical personnel to the developing world than all the G8 countries combined, although this comparison does not take into account G8 development aid spent on developing world healthcare. The Cuban missions have had substantial positive local impacts on the populations served. It is widely believed that medical workers are a vital export commodity for Cuba. According to Granma, the Cuban state newspaper, the number of Cuban medical staff abroad fell from 50,000 in 2015 to 28,000 in 2020.

Imanol Ortiz Amuriza was a Spanish musician and producer based in Cuba. He was considered a reference figure of the so-called latin-jazz movement. Percussionist by profession, leader of the musical group "Somos Amigos", he developed an important activity in the organization and production of different musical events in Cuba and Spain, always in relation to Cuban music. He was nominated several times for the Grammy Awards and was awarded the "Concha de Plata" at San Sebastian Jazz Festival.
