Estadio Eduardo Santos is a multi-use stadium in Santa Marta, Colombia, used mostly for football matches. It is the largest sports facility in Magdalena Department with a maximum capacity of 23,000 people. [1] [2] The stadium is named after politician and publisher Eduardo Santos, President of the Republic of Colombia from 1938 to 1942.

Unión Magdalena

Since its opening in 1951, Estadio Eduardo Santos has been home to the football club Unión Magdalena, and witnessed the birth of prominent figures of Colombian football, including former captain Colombia Carlos 'El pibe' ('The Kid') Valderrama. [3] In 2002, a monumental sculpture of Carlos Valderrama was unveiled at the stadium entrance in a grand ceremony with fireworks attended by about 14,000 people, including 3,000 special guests. [4] [5] The 6.5 meter high, eight ton monument sculpted by Amilkar Ariza, is considered the world's largest bronze for a footballer. [4] [5] [6] It has become the most visited sculpture in Santa Marta. [4] [6]

In 1968, with a final game against Deportivo Cali played in the Eduardo Santos Stadium, Union Magdalena won its first and only Colombian Football League Championship to date. During the celebration a motor vehicle accident took the life of a fan in the caravan of triumph, and it is said that Magdalena can never again rise to champion due to the "Curse of the Celebration.” [7]

Renovations

1998 - With an investment of 340 million pesos, the capacity of the stadium's South Stand was increased by 3,700 spectators. [1] [4]

2008 - A government initiative to restructure the system was launched in response to poor stadium conditions that had resulted from years of neglect. [3]

2013 - On March 3, the Unión Magdalena played their last game in the stadium against Llaneros FC, in compliance with the order to permanently close the Eduardo Santos due to precarious safety conditions for those attending. [4] Plans were announced for an investment of 20,000 million pesos in a new stadium Eduardo Santos on the same site, with input from the National Government. [8]

2014 - Plans are in progress to construct the new football stadium in time for the Bolivarian Games 2017. [9] [10] The new stadium is to be relocated to the Villa Deportiva Bolivariana. [10] A center for indoor sports such as gymnastics, boxing, and weightlifting is to be built at the current site of Estadio Eduardo Santos, which will be demolished due to deterioration of its physical infrastructure. The Colombian peace agreement referendum was held on October 2, 2016 to ratify the final agreement on the termination of the Colombian conflict between the Colombian government and the FARC guerillas. Bucaramanga-Santa Marta Fault

The Bucaramanga-Santa Marta Fault or Bucaramanga-Santa Marta Fault System is a major oblique transpressional sinistral strike-slip fault in the departments of Magdalena, Cesar, Norte de Santander and Santander in northern Colombia. The fault system is composed of two main outcropping segments, named Santa Marta and Bucaramanga Faults, and an intermediate Algarrobo Fault segment in the subsurface. The system has a total length of 674 kilometres (419 mi) and runs along an average north-northwest to south-southeast strike of 341 ± 23 from the Caribbean coast west of Santa Marta to the northern area of the Eastern Ranges of the Colombian Andes.

Estadio Sierra Nevada

Estadio Sierra Nevada is a football stadium in the city of Santa Marta, Colombia. The stadium was opened on 11 November 2017. It was the host stadium for the football matches at the 2017 Bolivarian Games and home stadium for local football club Unión Magdalena starting from 2018. The stadium is designed with a capacity of 16,162 people.

The 2019 Categoría Primera A season was the 72nd season of Colombia's top-flight football league. The season began on 25 January and concluded on 7 December. Junior entered the season as defending champions having won the 2018 Finalización tournament and successfully defended the title in the Torneo Apertura, beating Deportivo Pasto 5–4 on penalties after a 1–1 draw on aggregate to claim their ninth domestic league title on 12 June. Junior's winning streak was stopped in the Torneo Finalización by América de Cali, who won their fourteenth Primera A title and first since 2008 on 7 December by defeating the defending champions 2–0 on aggregate in the finals.

The 2022 Categoría Primera A season is the 75th season of the Categoría Primera A, Colombia's top-flight football league. The season began on 20 January and is scheduled to end on 30 November 2022. Deportivo Cali were the defending champions, having won the 2021 Finalización tournament.
