Esther Nyawa Lungu (born 2 June 1957 [1] ) is a well-known public figure from Zambia,who served as the First Lady of the country from 25 January 2015 to 24 August 2021. [2] She is the wife of the former Zambian president Edgar Lungu,and together they have six children. Born on 2 June 1957,her parents originally hailed from Zambia's Eastern Province.
While she was raised Catholic,Esther Nyawa Lungu and her husband are currently practicing Baptists. In 2015, [3] she travelled to the United States to participate in a series of events,including the First Ladies' and women's summits at the George W. Bush Institute in Dallas,Texas,and the United Nations in New York City. At the Invest in Women conference in Dallas,Esther Nyawa Lungu was a distinguished panellist,with the session being moderated by Cherie Blair. [2]
During her tenure as the First Lady of Zambia,Esther Nyawa Lungu was an advocate against child marriage. In December 2015,she established the Esther Lungu Foundation,where she serves as the chairman and mentor. The foundation's primary objective is to empower women and children in Zambia. [4] In May 2024,Esther Lungu was arrested for fraud. [5]
Esther Phiri was born on 2 June 1957 [6] to Agnes and Island Phiri,who were originally from the country's Eastern Province. She was raised Catholic,but she and her husband are now practicing Baptists. She said,"When we first met,Edgar had his UCZ hymn books while I had my Catholic catechism books,until we eventually found common ground in the Baptist faith." [7]
Edgar Lungu became a junior minister in the Vice President's Office in 2011,Minister of Home Affairs on 9 July 2012 and Defence minister on 24 December 2013 in the Patriotic Front government. Lungu was adopted as the candidate for the Patriotic Front during the January 2015 presidential by-election,following Michael Sata's death. He narrowly defeated the opposition candidate and was sworn-in as the President of Zambia on 25 January 2015 and his wife Esther became the First Lady of Zambia. [8] [ self-published source ]
Being the First Lady,Esther was part of many state visits along with the President. During 2015,she attended a series of meetings in the United States of America and she was invited by the George W. Bush Institute to participate in first lady conference and discuss topics of women's empowerment,health and technology. She was invited by the health minister of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and by Princess Latifa Bint Abulazis Al Saud to discuss support for women and child welfare programmes in Zambia. As a part of her continual humanitarian work,she launched Esther Lungu Foundation in December 2015. [9]
Lungu launched a trust fund which seeks to reduce vulnerability of the underprivileged persons using gender sensitive,participatory and environmentally sustainable approaches to improve their livelihoods. The Esther Lungu Foundation Trust (ELFT) aims to leverage its position to address issues relating to economic empowerment,maternity,children,neo-natal health,and water sanitation. [10]
The ELFT,with the Muslim Social and Welfare Trust,installed hand pumps with boreholes in many places in Chongwe District. The district was facing acute water shortage as the reserves in Chongwe River reduced. [11] It started identifying vulnerable families,where empowering women might eradicate poverty in the country. It began work with the ministries of Community Development and General Education to enrol schoolchildren. [12]
Lungu suggested hand soap can reduce one out of every three cases of childhood diarrhea. [13] She has advocated for bettering the lives of Zambia's older women,and donated 30,000K to six women's associations in Chilanga. [14] She congratulated her husband for choosing a woman as his running mate,a first in her country. [15] Some journalists see her social work as a campaign for her husband in upcoming presidential elections,which the Patriotic Front denies. [6]
The Special Olympics conferred on Lungu the title of 50th Anniversary Ambassador for the African Region,in September 2017,at the 50th anniversary of the Special Olympics Leadership Academy,hosted by Zambia at the Olympic Youth Development Centre. [16]

Catherine Namugala a Zambian politician. She was the First Deputy Speaker of the Zambian Parliament until 2021. She was nominated to that position by President Edgar Lungu,on 18 September 2016. She is the former Minister of Tourism,Environment and Natural Resources in the Zambian Cabinet. She also served as a Member of Parliament (MP),representing Mafinga in the Zambian Parliament from 2001 until 2016.
Margaret Mhango Mwanakatwe is a Zambian politician who was the Minister of Finance from 14 February 2018 to 14 July 2019. She worked previously as a businesswoman,accountant,and bank executive. She was the director for business development in Anglophone Africa at the United Bank for Africa at the bank's headquarters in Lagos,Nigeria. In this role,she supervised business development in Cameroon,the Democratic Republic of the Congo,Ghana,Kenya,Liberia,Mozambique,Tanzania,Uganda,and Zambia. Before that,she served as the managing director and chief executive officer of the United Bank for Africa Uganda Limited from March 2009 until May 2011.
Presidential elections were held in Zambia on 20 January 2015 to elect a president to serve the remainder of the term of President Michael Sata,following his death on 28 October 2014.
General elections were held in Zambia on 11 August 2016 to elect the President and National Assembly. A constitutional referendum was held alongside the elections,with proposals to amend the bill of rights and Article 79.
Christine Kaseba is a Zambian physician,surgeon and politician who served as the First Lady of Zambia from September 2011 until her husband's death in October 2014. She is the widow of former President Michael Sata,who died in office on October 28,2014. Kaseba made an unsuccessful bid for President of Zambia in the January 2015 special presidential election to succeed her husband. She was appointed Zambian Ambassador to France on April 16,2018.
Edgar Chagwa Lungu is a Zambian politician who served as the sixth president of Zambia from 26 January 2015 to 24 August 2021. Under President Michael Sata,Lungu served as Minister of Justice and Minister of Defence. Following Sata's death in October 2014,Lungu was adopted as the candidate of the Patriotic Front in a Convention of the Patriotic Front in Kabwe,for the January 2015 presidential by-election,which was to determine who would serve out the remainder of Sata's term. In the election,he narrowly defeated opposition candidate Hakainde Hichilema and took office on 25 January 2015.

Charlotte Harland Scott is a British-born Zambian economic and social development specialist who served as the First Lady of Zambia from October 2014 to January 2015 during the tenure of her husband,interim President Guy Scott. She had previously served as the Chief of Social Policy and Economic Analysis,Planning Monitoring and Evaluation for UNICEF Zambia from 2007 until 2012. She is the second female Nkomeshya since 19th century Mukamambo I who is mythologized as having spiritual powers that allowed her to change her physical form and veil her people to protect them from enemies.
