The Euffigneix statue or God of Euffigneix is a Celtic stone pillar statue found near Euffigneix, a commune of Haute-Marne, France. The statue has been dated to the 1st century BC, within the Gallo-Roman period. The statue is a human bust with a large relief of a boar on its chest. The boar was a potent symbol for the Celts and the figure has been thought to represent a Gaulish boar-god, perhaps Moccus.
The statue was apparently discovered by chance in 1922 by a farmer, when digging his horse out of some mud near Euffigneix. The statue was in a pit filled with bones. [1] : 19 [2] : 62 The find spot was not able to be securely located in 1930, when excavations were attempted by Adrien Blanchet . These excavations found nothing. [1] : 22 [2] : fn 144

The statue is made of limestone. It is cylindrical, somewhat squared around the torso. It measures 26cm tall and 18cm wide. [3] [4] It is broken at the top and bottom. Archaeologist Philip Kiernan has suggested it once bore the characteristic square base of the Iron Age Gallic buste-socles . [2] : 61–62 The reverse of the sculpture below the torc is also badly damaged. [5] : 96
The statue is the bust of a young beardless man. His head, tilted slightly to the right, sits atop an armless torso. A bas-relief of a boar takes up the front of this torso. The boar is sideways, with its face towards the figure's head; it is muscular and bristling, with elongated ears. In place of a left arm, a large stylised eye has been carved onto on his side. Around the figure's neck is a torc with ornate studs. His facial features are badly damaged. The mouth and lower part of the nose have been obliterated. The right eye is damaged. The sculptor has rendered his ears and eyes as heavy-set, but detailed and uncommonly well-proportioned. The top of the figure's head has been sheared off, leaving little of his hair except at the back of his head and in front of his ears. What survives of this hair reveals the care with which it was sculpted. The hair is tied into a palmette-shaped ponytail at the back of his head; long locks on either side reach to the figure's collarbone, tucked behind his ears and into his torc. The small size suggests that it was intended for a person or household, rather than larger-scale cult. [6] : 381 The form of the statue has been described a trunk-like [2] : 62 and its design as owing much to Celtic wood-carving. [6] : 381 Paul-Marie Duval has suggested the statue is a copy in stone of an anthropomorphic wooden original. [8] : 192 If so, the design is a lucky survival, as few examples of Celtic wood-carving have survived the centuries. [9] : 470
The statue has been dated to early in the Roman occupation of Gaul, around the 1st century BC. Stone sculpture is much more common in this era, [3] and the style of the facial features and boar-relief suggest such a date. [4]
The statue has been thought to represent a God mainly because of the large boar-relief on its chest. In Celtic art, human figures with abstract animal attributes are commonly associated with divinity. [2] : 62 Boars were particularly venerated by the Celts. They were depicted in cult imagery with large ears and elaborate bristles. [10] : 140 The boar god was called "Moccus" by the Gallic tribe Lingones and "Baco" by the Gauls of the Chalon-sur-Saône region. [4] [10] : 141 Indeed, Émile Thévenot has pointed out that Euffigneix lies within the tribal territory of the Lingones, so the statue may be a representation of Moccus. [11] : 156–157 The boar was a symbol of war, of wild nature, and of the hunt; the statue may therefore be of a god of war or a hunter-protector. [9] : 467–468
However, interpretation is difficult. The statue is an isolated piece. [5] : 96 Celtic bronze statuettes of boars sometimes served a religious function, but as household items they were sometimes simply prophylactic. The figure may rather be a representation of a Gaulish hero with a symbol of the hunt. [3] [12] : 47–48
The boar on this deity's chest has been likened to representations of boars on the coinage of the Ambiani, Veliocasses, and Sequani. [5] : 96 A very similar arrangement, in which an upside-down boar appears on the neck of a torc-wearing human, is on a coin of the Eburovices of Évreux. [10] : 105 [13] : 270
The eye on the left hand side has been suggested to be apotropaic, warding off the evil eye; a representation of the presumed boar-god's omniscience; or part of another animal figure, whose muzzle is just visible. [3] [10] : 106
In Gallo-Roman religion, Rosmerta was a goddess of fertility and abundance, her attributes being those of plenty such as the cornucopia. Rosmerta is attested by statues and by inscriptions. In Gaul she was often depicted with the Roman god Mercury as her consort, but is sometimes found independently.
In Gallo-Roman religion, Arduinna was the eponymous tutelary goddess of the Ardennes Forest and region, thought to be represented as a huntress riding a boar. Her cult originated in the Ardennes region of present-day Belgium, Luxembourg, and France. She was identified with the Roman goddess Diana.
Artio is a Celtic bear goddess. Evidence of her worship has notably been found at Bern in Switzerland. Her name is derived from the Gaulish word for 'bear', artos.
In Gallo-Roman religion, Arvernus was the tribal god of the Arverni and an epithet of the Gaulish Mercury. Although the name refers to the Arverni, in whose territory Mercury had at important sanctuary at the Puy-de-Dôme in the Massif Central, all of the inscriptions to Mercury Arvernus are found farther away along the Rhenish frontier. The similar name Mercury Arvernorix, ‘king of the Arverni’, is also recorded once. Compare also the title Mercury Dumiatis, found in the territory of the Arverni. The name, like the name of the Arverni and of Auvergne, appears to derive from a Proto-Celtic compound adjective *φara-werno-s ‘in front of alders’.

In Gallo-Roman religion, Smertrios or Smertrius was a god worshipped in Gaul and Noricum. In Roman times he was equated with Mars. His name contains the same root as that of the goddess Rosmerta and may mean "The Purveyor" or "The Provider", a title rather than a true name. Smertulitanus may be a variant name for the same god.
Vosegus was a name used in the Roman Empire for a Celtic god of hunting and forestation.
In Gallo-Roman religion, Sucellus or Sucellos was a god shown carrying a large mallet and an olla. Originally a Celtic god, his cult flourished not only among Gallo-Romans, but also to some extent among the neighbouring peoples of Raetia and Britain. He has been associated with agriculture and wine, particularly in the territory of the Aedui.
In ancient Celtic religion, Sulevia was a goddess worshipped in Gaul, Britain, and Gallaecia, very often in the plural forms Suleviae or (dative) Sule(v)is. Dedications to Sulevia(e) are attested in about forty inscriptions, distributed quite widely in the Celtic world, but with particular concentrations in Noricum, among the Helvetii, along the Rhine, and also in Rome. Jufer and Luginbühl distinguish the Suleviae from another group of plural Celtic goddesses, the Matres, and interpret the name Suleviae as meaning "those who govern well". In the same vein, Patrizia de Bernardo Stempel connects Suleviae with Welsh hylyw 'leading (well)' and Breton helevez 'good behaviour'.
Gallo-Roman religion is a fusion of the traditional religious practices of the Gauls, who were originally Celtic speakers, and the Roman and Hellenistic religions introduced to the region under Roman Imperial rule. It was the result of selective acculturation.
Cissonius was an ancient Gaulish/Celtic god. After Visucius, Cissonius was the most common name of the Gaulish/Celtic Mercury; around seventeen inscriptions dedicated to him extend from France and Southern Germany into Switzerland.
Icovellauna was a Celtic goddess worshiped in Gaul. Her places of worship included an octagonal temple at Le Sablon in Metz, originally built over a spring, from which five inscriptions dedicated to her have been recovered, and Trier, where Icovellauna was honored in an inscription in the Altbachtal temple complex. Both of these places lie in the valley of the river Moselle of eastern Gaul in what are now Lorraine in France and Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany. One such inscription was, somewhat unusually, inscribed on a copper tablet in Roman cursive letters.
Visucius was a Gallo-Roman god, usually identified with Mercury. He was worshipped primarily in the east of Gaul, around Trier and on the Rhine; his name is recorded on about ten dedicatory inscriptions. One such inscription has also been found in Bordeaux. Visucius is, along with Gebrinius and Cissonius, among the most common indigenous epithets of the Gaulish Mercury.
Moccus or Moccos is a Celtic god who is attested in one 2nd or 3rd century AD inscription from Langres, in which he is identified with the Roman god Mercury. Moccus has been connected, on etymological grounds, with pigs and boars. The boar was a potent symbol, of the hunt and of war, but also of prosperity.
Intarabus was a Gaulish god in the pantheon of the Treveri and some neighbouring peoples. His name is known from nine inscriptions from a relatively compact area in what are now Belgium, Luxembourg, western Germany and eastern France. He may have been the tutelary deity of one of the three pagi (subdivisions) of the Treveri. In most cases, Intarabus is invoked alone – without any synthesis to a Roman deity, and without accompanying female deities. However, one inscription invokes him as Mars Intarabus, noting that a fanum and simulacrum of this god had been restored at Trier. Meanwhile, another inscription from Mackwiller in Alsace gives Intarabus the epithet Narius. An inscription at Ernzen in Germany has his name as [In]tarabus, while another from Foy-Noville, invokes Entarabus in conjunction with the Genius Ollodagus.
The gods and goddesses of the pre-Christian Celtic peoples are known from a variety of sources, including ancient places of worship, statues, engravings, cult objects, and place or personal names. The ancient Celts appear to have had a pantheon of deities comparable to others in Indo-European religion, each linked to aspects of life and the natural world. Epona was an exception and retained without association with any Roman deity. By a process of syncretism, after the Roman conquest of Celtic areas, most of these became associated with their Roman equivalents, and their worship continued until Christianization. Pre-Roman Celtic art produced few images of deities, and these are hard to identify, lacking inscriptions, but in the post-conquest period many more images were made, some with inscriptions naming the deity. Most of the specific information we have therefore comes from Latin writers and the archaeology of the post-conquest period. More tentatively, links can be made between ancient Celtic deities and figures in early medieval Irish and Welsh literature, although all these works were produced well after Christianization.
The God of Bouray is a Celtic bronze statuette dredged from the River Juine within Bouray-sur-Juine. The statuette is of a cross-legged human figure with an oversized head and hooved feet. It is thought to represent a Gallic god, perhaps the stag-god Cernunnos.
The God of Amiens is a Gallo-Roman bronze statuette found in Amiens, Somme. The statuette, which has been dated to the end of the 1st century CE, is of a male youth sat in lotus position, with the right ear of an animal, perhaps a deer's. This statuette is on display at the Musée de Picardie.
The God of Étang-sur-Arroux is a Gallo-Roman bronze statuette, probably found in the commune of Étang-sur-Arroux, not far from Autun, France. The statuette is of a bearded figure sat in lotus position with two ram-headed, fish-tailed serpents feeding from a basket in his hands. The horned serpents and holes in the head for antlers identify this as a representation of the Gaulish stag god Cernunnos. One peculiar feature, the presence of human faces above each ear, has been commented on.
