Eugenia Bone is an American food and nature writer, as well as a chef and amateur mycologist. Her work has appeared in the New York Times , Wall Street Journal , Food & Wine , Saveur and the BBC Science Focus . Bone is the author of numerous books on food and mushrooms.

Bone has taught and lectured at the New York Botanical Garden, Denver Botanical Garden and the New York Public Library. She is the former president of the New York Mycological Society.

Career

Bone has written extensively about fungi and their role within nature, as well as within the health and mental health realms. [1] Bone has published numerous books including Fantastic Fungi Community Cookbook (2021) which includes recipes by wild mushroom foragers, mycologists and chefs specializing in mushroom-based dishes. Many of the contributors were featured in the 2019 documentary film, Fantastic Fungi , by Louie Schwartzberg. [1]

Her book Microbia: A Journey into the Unseen World Around You (2018) covers various microorganisms including endophytic fungi in plants as well as other species that live in the human gut. [2] [3] Her book, Mycophilia: Revelations from the Weird World of Mushrooms (2013) has received positive reviews in the New York Times among other news media outlets. [4]

Bone has taught and lectured widely at the New York Botanical Gardens, the Denver Botanical Gardens, the New York Public Library, and the Reuben Museum, among other venues. [5] [6] [7]

She is the former president of the New York Mycological Society. [8]

Bone's 2009 book, Well Preserved: Recipes and techniques for putting up small batches of seasonal foods was nominated for a James Beard Award. [13] Her 2021 book, Fantastic Fungi Community Cookbook won the Nautilus Silver Medal Award for food, cooking and healthy living. [14]

Personal life

Bone spent her youth in New York City. Her father, Edward Giobbi is of Italian heritage and was a James Beard Award-winning chef. She met her husband, Kevin, in Colorado Springs. [1] [2] Bone lives in Colorado and New York City. [15]

In addition to two decades as a food critic, mainly spent at the Los Angeles Times and The New York Times, Reichl has also written cookbooks, memoirs and a novel, and been co-producer of PBS's Gourmet's Diary of a Foodie, culinary editor for the Modern Library, host of PBS's Gourmet's Adventures With Ruth, and editor-in-chief of Gourmet magazine. She has won six James Beard Foundation Awards.

Pier Andrea Saccardo was an Italian botanist and mycologist. He was also the author of a color classification system that he called Chromotaxia. He was elected to the Linnean Society in 1916 as a foreign member. His multi-volume Sylloge Fungorum was one of the first attempts to produce a comprehensive treatise on the fungi which made use of the spore-bearing structures for classification.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">William Murrill</span> American botanist and mycologist (1869–1957)

William Alphonso Murrill was an American mycologist, known for his contributions to the knowledge of the Agaricales and Polyporaceae. In 1904, he became the assistant Curator at the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG). He, along with the NYBG, founded the journal Mycologia and was its first editor for 16 years. Murrill was known to travel extensively to describe the mycota of Europe and the Americas. He traveled along the East Coast, Pacific Coast, Mexico and the Caribbean. Although Murrill was a very influential person at the NYBG, having worked his way up to become assistant director in 1908, his rather eccentric personality caused problems with his job. He went on annual collecting trips to Mexico, the Caribbean, Europe, and South America, sometimes, without informing any of his colleagues prior. These trips resulted in a cumulative total of 70,000 specimens, 1,400 of which are deposited in the NYBG.

Orson Knapp Miller Jr. was an American mycologist. He published numerous papers in mycology and was responsible for the naming of many taxa, as well as being one of the authors erecting the genus Chroogomphus. He described Omphalotus olivascens, several species of Amanita, and the ghoul fungus Hebeloma aminophilum.

Derek Agutter Reid was an English mycologist.

Miroslav Smotlacha was a Czech mycologist. He was born in Vinohrady and attended the Institute of Chemical Technology in Prague.

"Seeking the Magic Mushroom" is a 1957 photo essay by amateur mycologist Robert Gordon Wasson describing his experience taking psilocybin mushrooms in 1955 during a Mazatec ritual in Oaxaca, Mexico. Wasson was one of the first Westerners to participate in a Mazatec ceremony and to describe the psychoactive effects of the Psilocybe species. The essay contains photographs by Allan Richardson and illustrations of several mushroom species of Psilocybe collected and identified by French botanist Roger Heim, then director of the French National Museum of Natural History. Wasson's essay, written in a first person narrative, appeared in the May 13 issue of Life magazine as part three of the "Great Adventures" series.

Mary Elizabeth Banning (1822–1903) was an American mycologist and botanical illustrator from Maryland.

In dining, a course is a specific set of food items that are served together during a meal, all at the same time. A course may include multiple dishes or only one, and often includes items with some variety of flavors. For instance, a hamburger served with French fries would be considered a single course, and most likely the entire meal. Likewise, an extended banquet might include many courses, such as a course where a soup is served by itself, a course where cordon bleu is served at the same time as its garnish and perhaps a side dish, and later a dessert such as a pumpkin pie. Courses may vary in size as well as number depending on the culture where the meal takes place.

Gary Lincoff (1942–2018) was an American mycologist and naturalist. Lincoff taught at the New York Botanical Garden for over 40 years and authored numerous books and field guides on mushrooms.

Fungi are a common theme or working material in art. They appear in many different artworks around the world, starting as early as around 8000 BCE. Fungi appear in nearly all artforms, including literature, paintings, and graphic arts; and more recently, contemporary art, music, photography, comic books, sculptures, video games, dance, cuisine, architecture, fashion, and design. There are a few exhibitions dedicated to fungi, and even an entire museum.
