Everitte Barbee (born 1988) is an American Arabic Calligrapher known for works that incorporate religious, literary and pop culture messages. His works juxtapose traditional Arabic scripts with modern imagery to convey strong political messages. [1] All of his works currently incorporate the Diwani Jali script. [2]

Biography

Everitte was born in Nashville, Tennessee and attended the Montgomery Bell Academy. [3] Everitte later graduated from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland with a Masters in International Business and Arabic. [1] During a semester abroad in 2009, he started learning Arabic Calligraphy from the master calligrapher Adnan Farid. [4] He moved to Beirut to continue developing his skills, learning more about Arabic Calligraphy, as well as improving his Arabic in 2010. [5] [6]

Career

Everitte started working on the "Quran for Solidarity" project as a way to improve his calligraphy skills. He began writing Surahs from the Quran in geometric shapes as a way to practice the art. [4] Following the controversy surrounding the construction and operation of the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro, Barbee was inspired to expand his project and develop one piece for each Surah of the Quran, as a way of creating appreciation for the Quran among his peers in the west. [4]

Thuluth is a script variety of Islamic calligraphy. The straight angular forms of Kufic were replaced in the new script by curved and oblique lines. In Thuluth, one-third of each letter slopes, from which the name comes. An alternative theory to the meaning is that the smallest width of the letter is one third of the widest part. It is an elegant, cursive script, used in medieval times on mosque decorations. Various calligraphic styles evolved from Thuluth through slight changes of form.

Kufic Style of Arabic script

Kufic script is a style of Arabic script that gained prominence early on as a preferred script for Quran transcription and architectural decoration, and it has since become a reference and an archetype for a number of other Arabic scripts. It developed from the Arabic alphabet in the city of Kufa, from which its name is derived. Kufic script is characterized by angular, rectilinear letterforms and its horizontal orientation. There are many different versions of Kufic script, such as square Kufic, floriated Kufic, knotted Kufic, and others.

Hassan Mourad

Hassan Sobhi Mourad was an academic, a calligrapher, an artist, a researcher, an author and a poet. He specialized in Arabic Calligraphy, its development and teaching, drawing to all age groups, as well as contributing in writing art-related articles. Born in Syria, Hassan Mourad lived abroad in various countries and continents for over thirty-five years due to his career in diplomatic service. Though living abroad for most of his adult life, he remained passionate about the Arabic Language, its history and the art of Arabic Calligraphy. Mourad was influenced at the early age of 14 by a fellow Syrian writer without having ever met him; this artist, AbdulRahman Fakhoory, predicted a bright future in art for Mourad.

Hashem Muhammad al-Baghdadi

Hashem Muhammad al-Baghdadi (1917-1973) was an Iraqi master calligrapher, noted for his lettering which exhibited a steadiness of hand and fluidity of movement. In his later life, he was acknowledged as the "imam of calligraphy" across the Arab world, and would be the last of the classical calligraphers. He also authored several important texts on the art of calligraphy.
