Everton Football Club is an English professional association football club based in Liverpool that competes in the Premier League, the top tier of English football. The club was a founder member of the Football League in 1888, and has, as of May 2023, competed in the top division for a record 120 seasons, having missed only four top-flight seasons. Everton is the club with the second-longest continuous presence in English top-flight football, and ranks third in the all-time points rankings. The club has won nine league titles, five FA Cups, one European Cup Winners' Cup and nine Charity Shields.

He was known as "Ernie" – a contraction of Ernest, his father's name – to avoid confusion with Liverpool and England striker Roger Hunt. In 1971 he was the winner of the inaugural BBC Goal of the Season award.
William McInanny Carr is a Scottish former footballer, who played in the Football League for Coventry City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Millwall. During his time with Coventry, Carr played in six full international matches for Scotland. He later played in non-league football for Worcester City, Willenhall Town, Maidstone United, Stafford Rangers and Stourbridge.

John Hurst is an English former professional footballer. Born in Blackpool, Lancashire, Hurst joined the youth system for Everton, making his first team debut in the 1965–66 season. Originally a striker, Everton manager Harry Catterick made Hurst into a centre-half, a position in which he appeared in the 1968 FA Cup Final. He formed a defensive partnership with Brian Labone, the club captain of Everton at the time. Following the introduction of substitutes to English football in 1965 Hurst became Everton's first ever sub replacing Fred Pickering at Stoke City's Victoria Ground in August 1965. Everton won the league title in the 1969–70 season and Hurst was an ever-present during this campaign, making 42 appearances and contributing 5 goals. He also won the 1970 FA Charity Shield with Everton. Hurst was transferred to Oldham Athletic following the 1975–76 season.

The 2011–12 season of Everton F.C. was the club's 20th season in the Premier League and 58th consecutive season in the top division of English football. It was also Everton's 113th season of league football and 115th season in all competitions. The club entered the League Cup in the second round and were knocked out in the fourth round following a 1–2 home defeat to Chelsea. The club entered the FA Cup in the third round and advanced all the way to the semi-finals where they faced rivals Liverpool, at Wembley, for the first time since 1989. Everton's run ensured they stretched their number of quarter-final appearances in the competition to 41, which is a record. Despite taking the lead in the semi-final, Everton lost the game 1–2.
The 1895/96 Football League season was the eighth in Football League history with Everton having been an ever present in the top division. The club played thirty-three games in England's two major competitions, winning eighteen, drawing seven and losing eight. The club finished the season in third place, six points adrift of Champions Aston Villa, and were defeated in the quarter final of the F A Cup by eventual winners The Wednesday. Their Goodison Park home hosted the drawn semi final between Wednesday and Bolton Wanderers.
