The Ewer of Saint-Maurice d'Agaune is a gold reliquary likely of Byzantine origin found in the treasury of the monastery at Saint-Maurice d'Agaune. Speculation has surrounded its origination and date of creation. The enameled ewer is one of the many treasures found at the Saint-Maurice d'Agaune monastery. The origins of the piece were said to have been seventh century, but until more recently, in 2008, it is argued to have been from the fifth or early sixth century due to the application of the cloisonné. Description

The Ewer is 30.3 cm high with a long neck and two rounded discs forming the body. The motifs centralized on the body of the ewer are, on one disk, two eagle-headed griffins, and on the other disk, two lions encompassing a lotus tree. [2] The tall neck also has two enamel rectangular pieces with detailed design work.

The intricate cloisonné work utilizes irregular shaped sapphires, and other deep enamel of emerald green, pearl white, and dark blue. [2] The colored gemstones were understood primarily as symbolic representations of the cycle of the seasons in the Byzantine period - green for spring, blue for winter, red for summer, and white for autumn, which is also attributed to a similar vase found at Saint-Maurice d'Agaune. Origin

The date and origination of the ewer has been highly debated among art historians and students. This debate includes belief that it originated from Islamic, Carolingian, or Sasanian origins. [2] Although some of the imagery of the ewer could allude to a multitude of origins, the griffin disk enamel work tie this piece to the Byzantine period. [3]

Previous to 2008, it was presumed to have been a piece from the seventh century, but in the late fifth century stylistic changes moved from plain foil beneath the gemstone inlay to a decorative style that remained popular from the late fifth century and after. [1] Instead of utilizing the popular decorative foil used predominately after the late fifth century, it has the plain foil style relevant to earlier fifth century work. [1]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Cloisonné</span> Enamelling technique used on metal

Cloisonné is an ancient technique for decorating metalwork objects with colored material held in place or separated by metal strips or wire, normally of gold. In recent centuries, vitreous enamel has been used, but inlays of cut gemstones, glass and other materials were also used during older periods; indeed cloisonné enamel very probably began as an easier imitation of cloisonné work using gems. The resulting objects can also be called cloisonné. The decoration is formed by first adding compartments to the metal object by soldering or affixing silver or gold as wires or thin strips placed on their edges. These remain visible in the finished piece, separating the different compartments of the enamel or inlays, which are often of several colors. Cloisonné enamel objects are worked on with enamel powder made into a paste, which then needs to be fired in a kiln. If gemstones or colored glass are used, the pieces need to be cut or ground into the shape of each cloison.

The Viola Concerto, Sz. 120, BB 128 was one of the last pieces Béla Bartók wrote. He began composing it while living in Saranac Lake, New York, in July 1945. It was commissioned by William Primrose, a respected violist who knew that Bartók could provide a challenging piece for him to perform. He said that Bartók should not "feel in any way proscribed by the apparent technical limitations of the instrument". After the excavation, the treasure was transferred to Vienna, the dynastic capital of the Habsburg Monarchy. Hedwig glasses or Hedwig beakers are a type of glass beaker originating in the Middle East or Norman Sicily and dating from the 10th-12th centuries AD. They are named after the Silesian princess Saint Hedwig (1174–1245), to whom three of them are traditionally said to have belonged. So far, a total of 14 complete glasses are known. The exact origin of the glasses is disputed, with Egypt, Iran and Syria all suggested as possible sources; if they are not of Islamic manufacture they are certainly influenced by Islamic glass. Probably made by Muslim craftsmen, some of the iconography is Christian, suggesting they may have been made for export or for Christian clients. <i>Plique-à-jour</i>

Plique-à-jour is a vitreous enamelling technique where the enamel is applied in cells, similar to cloisonné, but with no backing in the final product, so light can shine through the transparent or translucent enamel. It is in effect a miniature version of stained-glass and is considered very challenging technically: high time consumption, with a high failure rate. The technique is similar to that of cloisonné, but using a temporary backing that after firing is dissolved by acid or rubbed away. A different technique relies solely on surface tension, for smaller areas. In Japan the technique is known as shotai-jippo, and is found from the 19th century on.

The area today known as Slovakia has been inhabited throughout the prehistoric period.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Medieval jewelry</span>

The Middle Ages was a period that spanned approximately 1000 years and is normally restricted to Europe and the Byzantine Empire. The material remains we have from that time, including jewelry, can vary greatly depending on the place and time of their creation, especially as Christianity discouraged the burial of jewellery as grave goods, except for royalty and important clerics, who were often buried in their best clothes and wearing jewels. The main material used for jewellery design in antiquity and leading into the Middle Ages was gold. Many different techniques were used to create working surfaces and add decoration to those surfaces to produce the jewellery, including soldering, plating and gilding, repoussé, chasing, inlay, enamelling, filigree and granulation, stamping, striking and casting. Major stylistic phases include barbarian, Byzantine, Carolingian and Ottonian, Viking, and the Late Middle Ages, when Western European styles became relatively similar.

André Fernand Thesmar was a French enameler. He is credited with bringing the style of soft-paste porcelain back into style, alongside sections with gold foil backings, in the 20th century. He also used the method of plique-à-jour, including works that were often inspired by Japanese and Chinese enameling. This artistic work required great deal of expertise, skill and delicacy. He showed his work at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle. His work is found in the collections of the Walters Art Museum, the Hessian State Museum, and the Toledo Museum of Art.

The craft of cloisonné enameling is a metal and glass-working tradition practiced in the Byzantine Empire from the 6th to the 12th century AD. The Byzantines perfected an intricate form of vitreous enameling, allowing the illustration of small, detailed, iconographic portraits.

The Fieschi Morgan Staurotheke is a small reliquary designed to hold a relic of the true cross, it is 1 1/16 x 4 1/16 x 2 13/16 inches overall with lid. It is an example of Byzantine enameling. The box is dated to 843. Both dates hover around the second wave of Byzantine Iconoclasm from 814 to 842, allowing this piece to become a lens into the post iconoclastic art. These reliquaries doubled as an icon in style and purpose. The physical material of icons and the content within the reliquary were believed to contained a spirit or energy. It was believed that reliquaries contained great power, thus explains its preservation throughout the years. There are numerous theories of where this piece was created and its movement. It's currently on display at the Metropolitan Museum.

The Beresford Hope Cross is a 9th-century Byzantine reliquary cross with cloisonné enameling. It was intended to be worn as a pectoral crucifix, perhaps holding a fragment of the True Cross in the compartment inside. The cross is thought to have been made in southern Italy around the end of Byzantine iconoclasm, between 843 and the mid tenth century. It has been held by the Victoria and Albert Museum since 1886.

Mycenae is a city in the Argolid, in the Peloponnese peninsula of Greece. It was first excavated by Heinrich and Sophia Schliemann in the 1870s and is believed to have flourished in the Mid- to Late Bronze Age. The fortifications of Mycenae were built with the use of Cyclopean masonry. With the citadel built on a cliff, the architects created protection not only for the upper class that lived within the walls, but the lower-class farmers in the surrounding areas, who could find refuge there in times of war. Due to high competition in the Mid to Late Bronze Age, the citadel wall expanded significantly with the inclusion of Grave Circle A and the addition of the Lion Gate.
