Extreme Tourist Afghanistan is a television documentary series written, directed and presented by Sabour Bradley that explores life in Afghanistan. [1]

Production

The series had its world premier in the UK on Current TV on 25 January 2011 [2] and has screened in more than 150 countries around the world on channels including Nat Geo Adventure, [3] Fox Traveler. [4] In French-speaking territories, it is called Bienvenue Chez Les Afghans in French and was screened by Canal + and Canal Sat. [5] The series was produced by Afghan television production company Kaboora Productions, post-produced by UK production company Speak-It Films and distributed by the UK's Target Entertainment.

Critical response

Extreme Tourist Afghanistan was critically acclaimed by both western and Afghan journalists for its portrayal of Afghans as real people and not just media stereotypes. In Australia there was extensive praise for the show from national and regional newspapers. The Sydney Morning Herald described the show as "highly recommended [6] ". In the UK's Guardian newspaper the show was quoted in an article about the Taliban. [7] In the USA, the show gained attention through the McClatchy newsgroup in their article Aussie's Afghan Travel Show a Tribute to Crazy Love. [8] It's been Afghan own reaction to the show that has been, arguably, the most important. The BBC Persian Service has featured the show and interviewed Sabour Bradley following widespread positive discussion about the show amongst Dari and Persian speakers. [9] Afghan Voice Radio has also interviewed Sabour Bradley. [10]

Ghezaal Enayat is an Afghan singer and songwriter. She rose to fame with her first duet song "Dil-e Beqarar". She sings both in Dari and Pashto languages. She was born in Kabul, and her parents are from Laghman.

Sharbat Gula is an Afghan woman who became internationally recognized as the 12-year-old subject in Afghan Girl, a 1984 portrait taken by American photojournalist Steve McCurry that was later published as the cover photograph for the June 1985 issue of National Geographic. The portrait was shot at Nasir Bagh, Pakistan, while Gula was residing there as an Afghan refugee fleeing the Soviet–Afghan War. Despite the photograph's high global recognition, Gula's identity remained unknown until 2002, when her whereabouts were verified and she was photographed for the second time in her life. Having lived and raised a family in Pakistan for 35 years, Gula was arrested by Pakistani authorities in 2016 and subsequently deported to Afghanistan in 2017 on the charge of possessing forged identity documents. However, in November 2021, Gula was granted asylum in Italy, three months after the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan.
