The Faculty of Civil Engineering and Building Services is an academic division of the Gheorghe Asachi Technical University of Iaşi, Romania, devoted to study and research in civil engineering.

Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including public works such as roads, bridges, canals, dams, airports, sewerage systems, pipelines, structural components of buildings, and railways. Civil engineering is traditionally broken into a number of sub-disciplines. It is considered the second-oldest engineering discipline after military engineering, and it is defined to distinguish non-military engineering from military engineering. Civil engineering takes place in the public sector from municipal through to national governments, and in the private sector from individual homeowners through to international companies.

History

The Romanian engineering school was founded when Gheorghe Asachi succeeded in persuading the Prince Scarlat Callimachi of Moldavia to establish the foundations of a "class of surveyors and building engineers in Romania" on November 15, 1813.

Engineering is the application of knowledge in the form of science, mathematics, and empirical evidence, to the innovation, design, construction, operation and maintenance of structures, machines, materials, devices, systems, processes, and organizations. The discipline of engineering encompasses a broad range of more specialized fields of engineering, each with a more specific emphasis on particular areas of applied mathematics, applied science, and types of application. Gheorghe Asachi was a Moldavian, later Romanian prose writer, poet, painter, historian, dramatist and translator. An Enlightenment-educated polymath and polyglot, he was one of the most influential people of his generation. Asachi was a respected journalist and political figure, as well as active in technical fields such as civil engineering and pedagogy, and, for long, the civil servant charged with overseeing all Moldavian schools. Among his leading achievements were the issuing of Albina Românească, a highly influential magazine, and the creation of Academia Mihăileană, which replaced Greek-language education with teaching in Romanian. His literary works combined a taste for Classicism with Romantic tenets, while his version of the literary language relied on archaisms and borrowings from the Moldavian dialect.

Scarlat Callimachi or Calimachi was a Romanian journalist, essayist, futurist poet, trade unionist, and communist activist, a member of the Callimachi family of boyar and Phanariote lineage. He is not to be confused with his ancestor, hospodar Scarlat Callimachi.

As a result of Asachi's endeavours, the Michaelian Academy (in Romanian: Academia Mihăileană) was established in Iaşi between 1835 and 1847. Having amongst its scholars the most representative men of science at that time. This first official institution representing Romanian Higher Education in Moldova, succeeded in addressing local needs pertaining to the Higher Technical Syllabus.

Academia Mihăileană was an institution of higher learning based in Iași, Moldavia, and active in the first part of the 19th century. Like other Eastern European institutions of its kind, it was both a high school and a higher learning institute, housing several faculties.

Higher Education in Civil Engineering and Architecture in Iaşi was initiated and established by the great scholar Gheorghe Asachi in 1848 with the assistance of the Application School for Engineering and Constructions. It was only in 1941 that the Faculty of Civil Engineering (later included architectural studies) became part of the Higher Polytechnic School of Iaşi, which is known today as Gheorghe Asachi Technical University.

Architecture is both the process and the product of planning, designing, and constructing buildings or any other structures. Architectural works, in the material form of buildings, are often perceived as cultural symbols and as works of art. Historical civilizations are often identified with their surviving architectural achievements.
