Fatuma Gedi is a Kenyan politician from Wajir town. A former member of the National Assembly from Wajir county. [1] The former Women representative for Wajir county. [2] In 2017 she won the seat through Party for development and reform, under the reign of the fourth president of the Republic of Kenya, Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta. [3]

Early life and education

Fatuma Gedi, a daughter of Mzee Gedi Ali. She lost her dad on 27th Sunday December 2020. [5] Gedi was born in 1988 in Wajir town, in the North Eastern part of Kenya. She completed her secondary education in 2004. [3] She then obtained her Diploma in Public Relations between the year 2006-2007 at Regional Institute of Business Management. [3]

Career

Gedi's career journey began in 2008, where she served as a team leader for a study on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) at the Population Council Organization. Her passion for helping communities continued, as she joined the Save the Children International Organization in 2009 to 2010, serving as a child protection and community mobilizing officer. [3]

Gedi's desire to make a difference led her to become a program officer at the Somali Aid Foundation from 2010 to 2012. It was during this time that Gedi's interest in politics began to grow, and in 2013, she decided to pursue it further. [3]

In January 2014 to March 2016, Gedi served as the Chairperson of the women's league, where she trained trainers on gender and leadership for the United Republican Party (URP). [3]

Since 2015 to date, Gedi has been a consultant on gender issues for the Centre for Multiparty Democracy Organization, where she continues to make an impact in promoting gender equality in politics. She has also served as a consultant on women's participation in leadership for the National Democratic Institute (NDI), further cementing her reputation as an advocate for women's rights and equality. It was in 2017 August, Kenya general election that Gedi became a Women representative for Wajir County through Party for development and reform (PDR). She served one term as the Member of the National Assembly of Kenya. [3]

She was endorsed by the Wajir elders for the second term as a Women representative for her county though she lost the seat to Fatuma Abdi Jehow, a member of Orange Democratic Movement(ODM). [4] In the North Eastern part of Kenya, the elders pick the leaders, those not favored by the elders, accept the decision though others defy. [6]

The North Eastern part of Kenya is mostly inhabited by the Somalis who are bound by strong cultural and ethnically practices. Politics is projected as a mostly men field, leaving women in the shadows. [7]

Personal life

Gedi was allegedly assaulted by Rashid Kassim, the Wajir East Member of Parliament on 22 October 2019. [8] Witnesses narrate that Mr. Rashid Kassim assaulted Gedi over allocation of money to his constituency. [9] The event caused uproar allover the nation and in the Parliament, the female Members of the National Assembly walked out in solidarity as an act to condemn the assault. [10]

Gedi gained national attention after an alleged sex tape involving her was leaked in 2019. [11] She said her pressing issue on the leaked tape is her children viewing the distorted tape. [11]

Abdirahman Ali Hassan is a Kenyan politician. He served in the government of Kenya as assistant minister for trade and industry from 2005 to 2007. A member of the Orange Democratic Movement, He was elected to represent the Wajir South Constituency in the National Assembly of Kenya in the Kenyan 2002 parliamentary election. He was also elected to the senate of Kenya in 2013, representing Wajir county, and becoming deputy minority leader in the senate.

Aden Keynan Wehliye is a Member of the National Assembly of Kenya. He served Wajir West constituency from 1997 to 2002 and 2007 to 2013. He then moved to Eldas constituency which was carved from Wajir West. Keynan served as the MP of Eldas in the 11th and 12th parliaments. He represented the Orange Democratic Movement until 2017 when he switched to the Jubilee Party. Keynan was re-elected on the Jubilee ticket in the 2022 elections. He is the longest-serving MP of the 13th Parliament of Kenya.

Fatuma Adan Dullo is a Kenyan politician and the current elected Senator for Isiolo County as well as the shortest serving Minority Whip. Fatuma Dullo made history after being among the first three female senators to be elected as well as the only one from the Northeastern Region. Sophia Abdi Noor is a Kenyan Politician serving as a Member of Parliament Ijara Constituency. She is the first woman to be elected as a Member of the 10th Parliament of Kenya from the North Eastern Region of Kenya.

Fatuma Abdi Jehow is a Kenyan politician from Wajir county. A member of the National Assembly of Kenya. The current Women Representative for Wajir county. She won the seat through the Orange Democratic Movement in the 2022 Kenya General Elections. It has been six months since Jehow gained the Women representative seat. Jehow won the seat by 36,064 votes against eleven candidates competing for the same seat. Among those she defeated was the then incumbent women representative for Wajir County, Fatuma Gedi, who managed to get 22,956 votes.

Florence Mwikali Mutua is a Kenyan politician from Busia town. A former member of the National Assembly of Kenya. A former Women representative for Busia county. She was the Women Representative for Busia county for two terms, from August 2013 to August 2022. Under the reign of the fourth president of Kenya, Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta. She served the two terms through Orange Democratic Movement. In the latest Kenyan election, the 2022 general election, she vied for the governor seat though she lost it to Paul Otuoma. Mutua is the only woman to vie for the gubernatorial race in Busia during the 2022 general election. If she had won, she would have become the first woman governor in Busia county.

Mishi Juma Khamisi Mboko is a Kenyan politician and a Member of Parliament for Likoni Constituency in Mombasa County. Mishi Mboko has been a member of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), since 2017
