A bulk carrier or bulker is a merchant ship specially designed to transport unpackaged bulk cargo—such as grain, coal, ore, steel coils, and cement—in its cargo holds. Since the first specialized bulk carrier was built in 1852, economic forces have led to increased size and sophistication of these ships. Today's bulk carriers are specially designed to maximize capacity, safety, efficiency, and durability.

A tanker is a ship designed to transport or store liquids or gases in bulk. Major types of tankship include the oil tanker, the chemical tanker, cargo ships, and a gas carrier. In the United States Navy and Military Sealift Command, a tanker used to refuel other ships is called an oiler but many other navies use the terms tanker and replenishment tanker. Kuzma Minin was a bulk carrier, registered in Murmansk, Russia. The bulk carrier delivered cargo around northern Europe, and visits ports such as Arkhangelsk, Gdańsk, Riga and Port Talbot. The name is given to commemorate Kuzma Minin, a hero of Russian resistance during the Time of Troubles.

National Bulk Carriers was a shipping company which owned and operated oil tanker ships and bulk carriers. Some of them were among the largest in the world at that time. It was one of the largest multinational corporations in the world.

Federal Tiber is a bulk carrier. It was the first freighter to ship iron ore from the Baffinland mines, out of Milne Inlet, on its way to Nordenham, Germany, on August 8, 2015. CBC North reported it carried 53,624 tonnes of ore.

<i>Federal Rideau</i>

Federal Rideau is a bulk carrier owned an operated by Fednav. She, and her sister ship, Federal Asahii, were built in Ōshima, Japan in 2000. The vessel entered service the same year. The vessel has had two incidents in her career, both in 2014.

Roy A. Jodrey was a bulk carrier owned by Algoma Central Railway. Named in honour of Roy A. Jodrey who was a director and shareholder of the company, the ship was launched and entered service in 1965, one of four ships constructed for the company to access ports on the Great Lakes and Saint Lawrence Seaway too small for use by the larger lake freighters. On 20 November 1974, Roy A. Jodrey struck Pullman Shoal in the St. Lawrence River in Alexandria Bay, New York. The vessel made it to the United States Coast Guard Station at Wellesley Island and tied up. At 03:00, the bulk carrier sank in 77 metres (254 ft) of water, with its entire crew reaching safety. No attempt to salvage the ship was made, but Algoma did try to salvage the vessel's cargo of iron ore, which led to the death of a diver. Roy A. Jodrey became a technical scuba diving site, whose difficulty has led to the deaths of several divers who have attempted it.

<i>John Hulst</i> (ship)

John Hulst was a lake freighter. She was one of four vessel of the Governor Miller Class which includes the museum ship SS William A. Irvin. She sailed from 1938 to 1983 and was operated by the Pittsburgh Steamship Company (later United States Steel Corporation.

OS35 (bulk carrier) Bulk carrier

MV OS 35 was a bulk carrier registered in Tuvalu, a flag of convenience. It was attacked by pirates near Somalia in 2017, and was beached near Gibraltar after a ship collision in 2022. The ship was disposed of afterwards.

MV Yasa Jupiter is a Turkish-owned, Marshall Islands-flagged bulk carrier. It was the first merchant vessel damaged during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
