Fernando Coimbra (born 1976) is a Brazilian filmmaker best known for directing A Wolf at the Door (2013) [1] and Sand Castle (2017). [2]

Career

Coimbra's feature directorial debut, A Wolf at the Door , premiered at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival and screened at that year's San Sebastián International Film Festival, where it was recognized as the best film in the Latinos Horizontes section. [3] A Wolf at the Door garnered Coimbra a nomination for Outstanding Directing – First-Time Feature Film at the 2015 Directors Guild of America Awards. [4] The following year, the film was nominated for Best Ibero-American Film at the 58th Ariel Awards. [5]

Coimbra co-directed the 2015 documentary Aqui Deste Lugar with Sergio Machado. [6] From 2015 to 2017, he directed episodes of Narcos . He co-directed the 2017 Brazilian HBO series O Honem da Sua Vida with Daniel Rezende. [7]

Sand Castle , Coimbra's Iraq War drama starring Nicholas Hoult and Henry Cavill, was released on Netflix in 2017. [8] His mafia film Carnival is Over is slated to premiere in the Special Presentations section of the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. [9]

A Wolf at the Door is a 2013 Brazilian thriller drama film written and directed by Fernando Coimbra, in his feature directorial debut. The film follows the story of Sylvia and Bernardo, the parents of a kidnapped girl, and Rosa, Bernardo's lover, who is suspected for the kidnapping. It is based on a real-life crime that occurred in the 1960s, where a woman named Neyde Maria Maia Lopes kidnapped and killed four-year-old Tania Maria Coelho de Araujo ("Taninha").

The film stars Nicholas Hoult, Logan Marshall-Green, Henry Cavill, Glen Powell, Tommy Flanagan, Beau Knapp, and Neil Brown Jr. The film centers on Matt Ocre, a young soldier in the United States Army, who is tasked with restoring water to a village in Iraq. It is inspired by Roessner's experience as a soldier in the Iraq War. It was released on April 21, 2017, on Netflix.
