The capital city of Kosovo, Pristina, especially National Theater-Pristina is the host of many different film festivals. Celebrities from all over the world walk in the red carpet of the festivals which are held annually. These festivals make the city attracts interest from local and international visitors, therefore making the city's life more dynamic. The list below shows the main film festivals held in Pristina.

Prishtina International Film Festival

Prishtina International Film Festival (PriFilmFest) is an annual festival seven-day festival. [1] It began in 2009 as a mark after the declaration of independence. It’s held on National Theater-Pristina in September, but the sixth edition is being held from 25 April to 2 May 2014. As part of the event, the winners receive a statue called "Golden Goddess", which is based from a figure "Goddess on the Throne" [2] that was discovered in Kosovo in 1956 [3] and had become city’s symbol. From 2010 PriFilmFest launched PriFilm Forum which consists seminars, workshops and discussions between Kosovo film-makers and those from neighbouring countries.

The PriFilmFest founders are: Vjosa Berisha, Fatos Berisha, Orhan Kerkezi and Faton Hasimja.

Hyjnesha ne Fron

Fest Film Kosovo “Hyjnesha ne Fron” is an annual festival which was founded in year 2002. [4] [5] It’s held between September and December. In the first five editions the festival has been held in different cities of Kosovo. Now traditionally it is held in on capital city of Kosovo, Pristina. The name of the festival comes from 5000-year-old monument found in Kosovo and it became Prishtina City's symbol. [6]

The festival program includes feature length fictions films and short films. The competition is divided in: [7]

  1. International Competition – for feature films from all over the world (over 60 minutes)
  2. Shorts Competition – for short films from all over the world(40 minutes or less)
  3. Shorts Competition – for short films national competition (40 minutes or less)
  4. Special Screening - new films by established film-makers

"SKENA UP" International Student Film & Theatre Festival

"Skena Up Festival" is an annual seven-day special international festival for students of film and theater. [8] [9] It began in year 2003 and it’s held between October and December in National Theater-Pristina. It was founded by a group of students and new artists from University of Prishtina. Is formed as a competition for upcoming artists that makes this festival unique. The festival has two goals. First providing suitable forum for students to present their work to the public therefore creating interaction with audience and also receiving feedback. Secondly, by bringing together peers from all over the world and introducing students to internationally renowned directors, producers, writers and actors. As a part of the festivals are workshops, AfterParties and volunteers.

Skena UP is part of The International Young Makers in Transit [10] which aims to create opportunities for young European theater makers to show their work on platforms all over Europe. While participating, the young artists engage with European colleagues and will build an international network.

Nine Eleven

"Nine Eleven" is an annual five-day festival dedicated in remembrance of the live lost in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in 2001. [12] [13] It began In 2003 as a film, sculpture and modern design competition expressing artists points of view on that particular day in 2001. From the second edition it has only short film competition. It’s held in September on National Theater-Pristina only dedicated only to Albanian film-makers. It was founded from Blerim Gjoci.

Rolling Film Festival

"Rolling Film Festival" is four-day international film festival dedicated to Roma Community. [15] It began in 2009 and now is in its fourth edition. In its third edition the festival took place in 5 different screening places throughout the city of Pristina. [16] Films are selected to demonstrate the diversity, richness, and common humanity of Roma stories, therefore goal of the festival is showing the "dreams" and culture of Roma community. [17] The part of the festival are discussion session between movies, workshops, volunteers and music concerts.

Nje Bote Film Festival

"Nje Bote" Film Festival is an annual International Documentary Film Festival on Human Rights where over 320 documentaries, with the topic of the drastic violations of human rights around the globe, were shown. It is held in "ABC" Cinema in Pristina. [18] [19] It began in 2000 and now it's in 12th edition. It is organised by Council for the Protection of the rights and Freedom (CDHRF), [20] as a part of the Prague-based "World One" Festival. The Festival’s aim is to promote human rights, freedoms, and democracy, but also to feature meaningful debates on issues like human rights, civil society, foreign policy, environmental policy, etc. “One World” Festival remains a unique organization in Kosovo because of its topic.

This festival works on enriching the Kosovar cultural scene with the collision of the traditional and the contemporary. DAM Fest was founded by back then art student, now well known TV producer, musician, journalist and manager of Kosovo's Philharmonic Orchestra, Dardan Selimaj.

DokuFest is an international documentary and short film festival held in the Kosovo city of Prizren, held annually during early August. It was founded in 2002 by a group of friends. It has since grown into a cultural event that attracts international and regional artists and audiences. Films are screened throughout the eight-day festival and accompanied by programs, activities, and workshops.

The Prishtina International Film Festival, also known as the Pristina Film Festival and PriFilmFest, is a film festival held annually in Pristina, Kosovo, that screens prominent international cinema productions in the Balkan region and beyond, and draws attention to the Kosovar film industry. It was created after the 2008 Kosovo declaration of independence. The first festival was held in 2009, and featured actress Vanessa Redgrave as the host. In 2015, the festival was cancelled due to a cut in funding by the Ministry of Culture of Kosovo. The 7th edition of the festival, which was scheduled to take place from 24 April to 1 May, was thus instead held in Tirana, Albania on 24 and 25 April and renamed to "PriFest in Exile".

Arben Zharku is a producer based in Amsterdam Netherlands. Former Director of Kosovo Cinematography Center and SKENA UP International Students Film and Theatre Festival in Pristina. He graduated from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Pristina in 2004, in Acting, and in 2009 he graduated as a Producer at EAVE. From 2003-2014 Arben has also been working as a Manager at the Multimedia Centre in Pristina which has the aim to develop contemporary and children's theatre. As an actor, he has perform in different theater performances as well in different films. As a producer he has been involved in various film productions trying to build the respective infrastructure and he makes efforts to extend his knowledge by gaining experience from film production experts. He is member of the European Film Academy and member of the Board of Directors of the European Film Promotion.

The Cinematography in Kosovo in the Albanian language began its activities after the foundation of Kosovafilm, which produced short films, documentaries, cartoons and later feature films. Since 2008, the central authority for cinematography in Kosovo has been Kosova’s Cinematography Center (KCC) though numerous independent film companies are active in Kosovo. Before Kosovafilm, there were no fully Kosovan films.

Events and festivals in Gjakova are highly valued if not great in number. The historical city of Gjakova, Kosovo, especially the Old Bazaar (Çarshia), is the hub of many outdoor and indoor festivals, cultural events and street parades, and is a main attraction for tourists. Many events only take place once, while others are organised regularly on an annual basis by festival societies. Some of the events are organised by the city and others by private companies.

The National Theatre of Kosovo was founded in 1946 in the city of Prizren, Kosovo. It is the highest ranked theatre institution in the country, with the largest number of productions. The National Theatre is the only public theatre in Kosovo and therefore it is financed by Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport. This theatre has produced more than 400 premieres which have been watched by more than 3 million spectators.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Historical monuments in Pristina</span>

Historical monuments in Pristina are made up of 21 monuments out of a total of 426 protected monuments all over Kosovo. A large number of these monuments date back to the Byzantine and Ottoman periods. Since 1945, the Yugoslav authorities followed the idea of constructing a modern Pristina by relying in the urban development motto “destroy the old, build the new” and this resulted with major changes in the structure of the buildings, their function and their surrounding environment. However, numerous types of monuments have been preserved, including four mosques, a restored orthodox church, an Ottoman bath, a public fountain, a clock tower, several traditional houses as well as European-influenced architecture buildings such as the Museum of Kosovo. These symbolize the historical and cultural character of Pristina as it was developed throughout centuries in the spirit of conquering empires.

Fairs in Pristina started since the medieval period, at the time when it was famous for its annual trade fairs and its goat hide and goat hair articles. Pristina always had a development in trading due to its position in the Balkan trade routes. Despite that fact, Pristina, or Kosovo in general, is not known for occurrence of fairs. With the development of culture and especially after the last war in 1999, Pristina has had progress on holding these kinds of events.

Pristina has only 3 active theatres National Theatre of Kosova, ODA Theatre and DODONA Theatre. They give live performances every week. There are 21 well-known Kosovan actors employed. They are located in the heart of Pristina. National Theatre is placed in the middle downtown of the city, near the main government building. ODA Theatre is placed in the Youth Centre Building, and Dodona Theatre is placed in Vellusha district, which is near Ibrahim Rugova Square.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tourism in Pristina</span>

Tourism in Pristina attracted 36,186 foreign visitors in 2012, which represents 74.2% of all visitors that visited Kosovo during that year. Foreign visitors mostly come from countries like Albania, Turkey, Germany, United States, Slovenia and North Macedonia, but also from other countries. Some of the most visited places in Pristina are Lake Batllava and Gadime Marble Cave, which are also among the most visited places in Kosovo.

Vjosa Berisha was a director, co-owner, and executive director of B2 – PR & Media Solutions, a production and public relations company established in 2003 with offices in Kosovo and Albania. She was also a co-founder and director of PriFilmFest – the Prishtina International Film Festival in Pristina. From 2013, she was a member of the European Film Academy.
