Financial Planning Association (FPA) is the largest membership organization in the USA representing financial planners. Current membership is 22,000. [1]
FPA is primarily focused on supporting Certified Financial Planner members. The organization was formed from the merger of the Institute of Certified Financial Planners and the International Association for Financial Planning on January 1, 2000. The International Association for Financial Planning was founded in 1970 and the Institute of Certified Financial Planners was formed in 1973 by the first graduating class of the College for Financial Planning. The APA was formed in 1978, when two separate professional planning organizations, the American Institute of Planners and the American Society of Planning Officials, were merged into a single organization. The American Institute of Certified Planners is now the organization's professional branch.

The Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation is a professional certification mark for financial planners conferred by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards in the United States, and by 25 other organizations affiliated with Financial Planning Standards Board (FPSB), the owner of the CFP mark outside of the United States. The certification is not a government designation, nor an accredited degree, and is owned by the for profit Kaplan Corporation in the United States.
The American Academy of Financial Management (AAFM) was a US-based board of standards, certifying body, and accreditation council focused on the finance sector and management professionals. It was criticized in The Wall Street Journal as having low requirements for the credentials it confers and for excessive claims of links to other associations and industry experts. AAFM was superseded by the Global Academy of Finance & Management.

The Financial Planning Association of Australia is according to its website "the largest professional community of financial planners". It has over 14,000 members and affiliates, with 11,400 of them practising financial planners and 5,700 being certified financial planner( CFP) professionals. The FPA as it is most commonly referred to as, offers five different individual levels of membership which include the Certified Financial Planner Professional, Financial Planner AFP, Associate, Allied Professional and student. FPA also has two partnership programs, FPA Professional Practice Program and FPA Professional Partner Program. The educational activities they offer include the Certified Financial Planner Certification Program and the Continuing Professional Development. They hold an annual professionals congress which is attended by both members and non-members. The FPA has 31 Chapters throughout Australia which offer an events program. FUTURE2 FOUNDATION, PRO BONO service and 10 THOUSAND GIRL are their charitable and not-for-profit social enterprises. Under their consumer recognition side they host advertising campaigns to raise awareness amongst consumers and they also have an awards program.
