Firdaus Orchestra is an initiative of Expo City Dubai, an all-women ensemble based out of the United Arab Emirates. The orchestra is named Firdaus (meaning 'paradise' in Arabic). [1] [2]

History

Firdaus Orchestra is the brainchild of Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation & CEO Expo City Dubai and is mentored by Oscar-Winning Composer, A.R. Rahman. [3]

Conducted by Monica Woodman, it is the first all-women's orchestra based out of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. First seen at the opening ceremony of Expo 2020 Dubai, the orchestra includes over 50 professional musicians from across the world, coming together to set a foundation for orchestral culture in the Middle East. A.R. Rahman organized an orchestra by training a diverse group of musicians. [4] [5]

The orchestra plays a mix of classical, pop, and fusion music. They present performances and symphonic compositions by A.R. Rahman as well as Western orchestral harmonies and ancient melodies from the Orchestral Qawwali Project. [6] [7]

Firdaus Orchestra features Middle Eastern and Indian instruments such as the qanun, the buzuq, the ney, the oud, the daf, the darbuka and the sitar, along with Western orchestral instruments. [8]

Since its debut performance, the Orchestra took stage at Expo 2020 Dubai with artists including Andrea Bocelli, Hussain Al Jasimi, Anoushka Shankar, The Qawwali Project, and mentor A.R. Rahman.

In its second season the Orchestra was joined by Nigerian artist Sunmisola Agebebi, Beyonce for the launch of the Royal Atlantis, "Asia's Vocal Supreme" Katrina Velarde of The Philippines, Atif Aslam and were selected to be a part of the Disney 100-year celebration taking the stage for the Disney Princess Concerts in Dubai. The Reinvent Series

The Reinvent Series was launched on World Music Day (21 June) with a 1-hour film featuring rearranged pieces of renowned German composer Johannes Brahms. [11]

The Series' debut sees the all-women orchestra perform four of Brahms' compositions: Hungarian Dance, Clarinet Quintet in B minor, Symphony #3 and Variations on a Theme by Haydn. [13]

<i>Sang-e-Mah</i> Pakistani television series

Sang-e-Mah is a Pakistani television series, and second series in the trilogy preceded by Sang-e-Mar Mar. Having central plot line inspired from William Shakespeare's Hamlet, it is written by Mustafa Afridi, directed by Saife Hassan and produced by Momina Duraid under her banner production MD Productions. The series revolves around the mysteries that unfold when a young man Hilmand decides to avenge the murder of his father. It focuses on the oppression of women in the form of 'ghag' in tribal areas and also deals with interreligious harmony. It features an ensemble cast of Nauman Ijaz, Atif Aslam, Muhammad Hassaan Sania Saeed, Samiya Mumtaz and Omair Rana with Kubra Khan, Zaviyar Nauman Ijaz and Hania Aamir in supporting roles. This marks the television acting debut of Aslam who played the main role of Hilmand Khan, and sung the soundtrack of the series as well.

Ponniyin Selvan: I is the soundtrack album for 2022 Indian Tamil-language epic period drama film of the same name directed by Mani Ratnam which features an ensemble cast of Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, R. Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Jayaram, Prakash Raj, Rahman and R. Parthiban. The film’s soundtrack and score were composed by Ratnam's norm composer A. R. Rahman, marking the duo's 30th year collaborating.

On January 30, 2023, American singer Beyoncé was asked to perform for an invitation-only crowd at Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah to commemorate the unveiling of a new luxury resort hotel, Atlantis The Royal. This was her first live performance since 2018. Beyoncé was reportedly paid over $24 million for the show, making it the highest-paying private concert in history, according to Forbes.

Firdaus Studio is a recording studio headquartered in Dubai, UAE that opened in early 2022, as a collaboration between Expo 2020 Dubai and Oscar award-winning artist and composer A.R. Rahman. Firdaus Studio is Dubai's first Certified Dolby Atmos HE studio. It is home to the Firdaus Orchestra - the first all-female, Arabic ensemble. The studio is located in Al Forsan Zone, Expo City Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Ponniyin Selvan (Original Score) is a 2022 soundtrack album by A. R. Rahman. Released on January 6, 2024, to coincide with Rahman's 57th birthday, this album has used in the Indian Tamil-language epic period drama film of the same name, directed by Mani Ratnam. The film features an ensemble cast, including those such as Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, R. Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Jayaram, Prakash Raj, Rahman, and R. Parthiban.
