The song follows the film and its soundtrack's common lyrical theme of personifying hip hop. It was released as the lead single from Brown Sugar on August 5, 2002, by MCA Records.

Ella Mai Howell is an English R&B singer-songwriter. Her musical career began at London's British and Irish Modern Music Institute in 2014, during which time she auditioned as part of a trio on the 11th season of The X Factor. In 2015, she released her debut four-track solo extended play (EP), Troubled in October of that year. The EP and her performances on social media were discovered by American record producer DJ Mustard, who signed Mai to his record label 10 Summers Records, an imprint of Interscope Records.

"Money" is a song by American rapper Cardi B. It was released on October 23, 2018, through Atlantic Records. The song was written by Cardi B with its producer J. White Did It. Its music video features Cardi playing characters in different locations, including in an art museum, a bank and a brothel. Cardi performed the song at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards, alongside the "Money Bag" instrumental. The song and its music video received acclaim and accolades including Best Hip Hop Video at both the 2019 BET Hip Hop Awards and the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards and a Rhythm & Bars Award at the 2019 Soul Train Music Awards. "Money" was certified quadruple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
H.E.R. is a compilation album by American singer H.E.R., released on October 20, 2017, by RCA Records. The album comprises songs from the singer's EPs H.E.R., Vol. 1 (2016) and H.E.R., Vol. 2 (2017), and includes six additional songs. The album won Best R&B Album and received four other nominations at the 61st Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year and Best New Artist for H.E.R.

Joelle James is an American songwriter and singer. She is best known for writing the lyric melody of Ella Mai's 2018 single "Boo'd Up", which was nominated for Song of the Year, won Best R&B Song at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards, and is the longest charting number one R&B/Hip-Hop record for a female artist on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay charts since its inception in 1992. A graduate of the Berklee College of Music, James was discovered by Chris Brown in 2011. Brown subsequently signed her to a label deal with CBE and Interscope Records. James has also written songs for Tamar Braxton, Saweetie, Coi Leray, and Justine Skye among others.
