Elwood Brown

Elwood Stanley Brown was an American sports organizer in Illinois, Manila, Europe, and South America. In his short life, he made a number of major accomplishments: the intensive promotion of sports among Filipinos, originating international sports competitions in Asia, the promotion of the Olympics around the world, the founding (1910) of the first Boy Scout troops in the Philippines, and initiating and organizing the American Expeditionary Forces games and its corollary the Inter-Allied Games at the end of the War in Europe.

On 10 May 1917, the association football teams of the Philippines and Japan faced each other at the 1917 Far Eastern Games. The tournament was contested by Japan, the Philippines and China. The Japanese team was represented by a selection from the Tokyo Higher Normal School. Paulino Alcántara, a renowned football player, was part of the Philippine squad who led the Philippines to its biggest recorded victory in an international football match and also resulted to Japan's biggest defeat. However, this match is not recognized as an official international match by the Japan Football Association.

At the 1919 Far Eastern Championship Games, the athletics events were held in Manila, Philippines in May. A total of 18 athletics events were contested at the competition. The five-mile road race was held for the last time, being replaced by a five-mile track race at the following edition.
