For the Unfallen is a 1959 collection of poems by English poet Geoffrey Hill. The poems in the collection have been described as largely vatic in nature. The collection garnered acclaim upon release, and contains the famous poem "Genesis".

Composition

The poem "Genesis" was written in 1952. The poems from "Requiem for the Plantagenet Kings" to the work "Of Commerce and Society" were written from 1955 to 1957. The last five poems, which in the words of scholar Vincent B. Sherry "signal a reassessment of the working approaches" in most preceding poems, are from 1958. [1]

Themes and interpretation of individual poems

Sherry argues that throughout the collection, the speaker believes words do not need to have single clear referents. He notes how the poet-speaker in "Genesis" first feels hope about the power of his words to "create a world", then despair when failing to represent surrounding occurrences accurately, and ultimately openness to a word lacking a single reference – and how the last phase is an aspect of the later poem "Holy Thursday" as well. [1]

"Genesis"

The three lines in Part V of the poem, which start with "By blood we live", are among Hill's more famous lines. [2]

"God's Little Mountain"

William Logan claimed that this poem is about "the absence of gods, not the presence of devils". [3]

"The Bidden Guest"

According to David C. Mahan at Yale University, this poem is about a communicant at the Eucharist who experiences "distressed belief": he believes, but cannot truly engage. In Mahan's view, the poem "generates a muted longing for the authentic, a yearning for contact with spiritual reality"; however, it still does not, in Mahan's view, advocate "any easy resolution to the difficulties and ambiguities" of faith. The scholar also questions whether the poem's title refers to a God who has been invited at the rite to attend, or refers to the communicant (who is like a guest in his aloofness). [2]

"In Memory of Jane Fraser"

A ballad from 1953, [1] John P. Vickery said in the book The Modern Elegiac Temper (2006) that Hill explores the elegiac convention with "a resolute quizzicality" in this poem, refusing both to mourn explicitly and to "exalt his subject extravagantly". Vickery noted that the last stanza is characteristic of an elegy, but that there is a low-keyed rendering of the death. [4] Erica McAlpine, in the book The Poet's Mistake (2020), interpreted the last part of the poem as "a spring that cannot quite console". [5]

Hill strongly disliked the work, [3] and a new version of the poem with a different final line appears in King Log (1968). [5]

"The Turtle Dove"

Denis Donoghue speculated that this poem is a tribute to John Crowe Ransom's “The Equilibrists”. [6]

"Asmodeus"

A sequence of two sonnets whose subject is marriage. In the first sonnet Hill dramatizes the isolation of lovers from the real world, their building a house of love based on their mutual self-absorption. The demon Asmodeus is the protagonist of the second sonnet (addressed as 'you') who stands apart, observing, the lovers' world. [7]

Reception

For the Unfallen received very positive reviews. Al Alvarez described the collection as "an extraordinarily fine achievement, one of the three or four important first books of poetry to appear in the fifties." Sherry argued that in the last poems, Hill "turns his dissatisfaction with his own tour de force into an experience both technically and intellectually satisfying for us." [1]

In 2011, Mahan deemed the poem "The Bidden Guest" an example of Hill achieving the “redemptive power” for which Hill later praised George Eliot’s Middlemarch in his critical writings. In 2014, Owen Boynton, an English teacher, [8] referred to the first line of "The Turtle Dove" as a "beautiful chiasmus". [9]

"In Memory of Jane Fraser"

Of the first part of the poem, Vickery says that "the setting is saved from the charge of sentimentality by the apt concluding military image" of resisting an adversary. Vickery also praised the low-keyed rendering of her death, saying Hill "captures vividly the immediacy of the effect of an actual personal death". [4]

Erica McAlpine, in the book The Poet's Mistake (2020), deemed the last line of the original "somewhat inane", stating the last word was "awkwardly intransitive". She praised the last line in the revised edition as more resonant, writing that the new ending "resumes with deadly vigor the iambic march" that "poignantly slackens" earlier on, and also creates an image more in line with the overall point of the poem. Publius Ovidius Naso, known in English as Ovid, was a Roman poet who lived during the reign of Augustus. He was a younger contemporary of Virgil and Horace, with whom he is often ranked as one of the three canonical poets of Latin literature. The Imperial scholar Quintilian considered him the last of the Latin love elegists. Although Ovid enjoyed enormous popularity during his lifetime, the emperor Augustus exiled him to Tomis, the capital of the newly-organised province of Moesia, on the Black Sea, where he remained for the last nine or ten years of his life. Ovid himself attributed his banishment to a "poem and a mistake", but his reluctance to disclose specifics has resulted in much speculation among scholars.

Wilfred Edward Salter Owen MC was an English poet and soldier. He was one of the leading poets of the First World War. His war poetry on the horrors of trenches and gas warfare was much influenced by his mentor Siegfried Sassoon and stood in contrast to the public perception of war at the time and to the confidently patriotic verse written by earlier war poets such as Rupert Brooke. Among his best-known works – most of which were published posthumously – are "Dulce et Decorum est", "Insensibility", "Anthem for Doomed Youth", "Futility", "Spring Offensive" and "Strange Meeting". Owen was killed in action on 4 November 1918, a week before the war's end, at the age of 25.

Theognis of Megara was a Greek lyric poet active in approximately the sixth century BC. The work attributed to him consists of gnomic poetry quite typical of the time, featuring ethical maxims and practical advice about life. He was the first Greek poet known to express concern over the eventual fate and survival of his own work and, along with Homer, Hesiod and the authors of the Homeric Hymns, he is among the earliest poets whose work has been preserved in a continuous manuscript tradition. In fact more than half of the extant elegiac poetry of Greece before the Alexandrian period is included in the approximately 1,400 lines of verse attributed to him, though several poems traditionally attributed to him were composed by others, e.g. Solon and Euenus. From 2010 to 2015 he held the position of Professor of Poetry in the University of Oxford. <i>Sonnets to Orpheus</i> Sonnet cycle by Rainer Maria Rilke

The Sonnets to Orpheus are a cycle of 55 sonnets written in 1922 by the Bohemian-Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke (1875–1926). It was first published the following year. Rilke, who is "widely recognized as one of the most lyrically intense German-language poets," wrote the cycle in a period of three weeks experiencing what he described a "savage creative storm." Inspired by the news of the death of Wera Ouckama Knoop (1900–1919), a playmate of Rilke's daughter Ruth, he dedicated them as a memorial, or Grab-Mal, to her memory.

The volta, is a rhetorical shift or dramatic change in thought and/or emotion. Turns are seen in all types of written poetry. In the last two decades, the volta has become conventionally used as a word for this, stemming supposedly from technique specific mostly to sonnets. Volta is not, in fact, a term used by many earlier critics when they address the idea of a turn in a poem, and they usually are not discussing the sonnet form. It is a common Italian word more often used of the idea of a time or an occasion than a turnabout or swerve.

Eva Dobell was a British poet, nurse, and editor, best known for her poems on the effects of World War I and her regional poems.

Decasyllabic quatrain is a poetic form in which each stanza consists of four lines of ten syllables each, usually with a rhyme scheme of AABB or ABAB. Examples of the decasyllabic quatrain in heroic couplets appear in some of the earliest texts in the English language, as Geoffrey Chaucer created the heroic couplet and used it in The Canterbury Tales. The alternating form came to prominence in late 16th-century English poetry and became fashionable in the 17th century when it appeared in heroic poems by William Davenant and John Dryden. In the 18th century famous poets such as Thomas Gray continued to use the form in works such as "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard". Shakespearean Sonnets, comprising 3 quatrains of iambic pentameter followed by a final couplet, as well as later poems in blank verse have displayed the various uses of the decasyllabic quatrain throughout the history of English Poetry.

"To the River Otter" is a sonnet by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Though its date of creation is uncertain, it was possibly composed in 1793. It deals with the image of the River Otter, near Coleridge's childhood home in Devon.

<i>Elegiac Sonnets</i>

Elegiac Sonnets, titled Elegiac Sonnets, and Other Essays by Charlotte Sussman of Bignor Park, in Sussex in its first edition, is a collection of poetry written by Charlotte Smith, first published in 1784. It was widely popular and frequently reprinted, with Smith adding more poems over time. Elegiac Sonnets is credited with re-popularizing the sonnet form in the eighteenth century. It is notable for its poetic representations of personal emotion, which made it an important early text in the Romantic literary movement.

"To The South Downs," also known as Charlotte Turner Smith's "Sonnet V," is one of Smith's earliest sonnets and the first to describe the River Arun and her childhood landscape. The poem first appeared in the first edition of Smith's Elegiac Sonnets in 1784.
