Forest Hill Hotel is an historic hotel in Pacific Grove, California. It was opened on July 1, 1926 and is one of the highest buildings in Pacific Grove. It is currently the Pacific Grove Senior Living. [1] [2]
The Forest Hill Hotel at Pacific Grove, California was designed by architect George Rushforth in a simplified Mediterranean Revival-style architecture. The hotel was built for retired businessman Samuel S. Parsons for $300,000 (equivalent to $5,163,158in 2023). The C. L. Wold Company construction company of San Francisco was the builder. It was under construction when it was unveiled on July 1, 1926. It is located on two blocks at 551 Gibson Avenue and Forest Avenue, in Pacific Grove. [3] [1] [4]
The five story structure has 100-rooms, and was constructed with a foundation of reinforced concrete. The hotel lobby includes open terraces at both the front and rear, as well as public and private dining areas, a ladies' parlor, and a lounge. The public rooms are paneled with Philippine mahogany, with tile floors. [3]
It quickly achieved a fully-booked status. [1] [2] There is a park and community center near the hotel; Parsons funded the building of tennis courts. [5] [1]
The hotel was part of the development of the area in the 1920s, at a time of rising automobile tourists as well as increased year-round residents. [5]
When Parsons died in 1946, his widow sold the hotel in February 1947 to a consortium of investors led by Luther E. Rodgers, Abraham H. Berk, and Louis Gross. [6]
While under the management of the Church, it operated without denominational prerequisites. Individuals interested in residing there would secure a lifelong lease, with prices ranging between $5,000 (equivalent to $56,729in 2023) and $7,000, (equivalent to $79,420in 2023). [7]

Palo Alto station is an intermodal transit center in Palo Alto, California. It is served by Caltrain regional rail service, SamTrans and Santa Clara VTA local bus service, Dumbarton Express regional bus service, the Stanford University Marguerite Shuttle, and several local shuttle services. Palo Alto is the second-busiest Caltrain station after San Francisco, averaging 7,764 weekday boardings by a 2018 count. The Caltrain station has two side platforms serving the two tracks of the Peninsula Subdivision and a nearby bus transfer plaza.
Myron Hubbard Hunt was an American architect whose numerous projects include many noted landmarks in Southern California and Evanston, Illinois. Hunt was elected a Fellow in the American Institute of Architects in 1908.
Adobe Creek, historically San Antonio Creek, is a 14.2-mile-long (22.9 km) northward-flowing stream originating on Black Mountain in the Santa Cruz Mountains. It courses through the cities of Los Altos Hills, Los Altos, and Palo Alto on its way to the Palo Alto Flood Basin and thence to southwestern San Francisco Bay in Santa Clara County, California, United States. Historically, Adobe Creek was a perennial stream and hosted runs of steelhead trout entering from the Bay, but these salmonids are now blocked by numerous flood control structures, including a tidal gate at the creek's mouth and a long concretized rectangular channel culminating in an impassable drop structure at El Camino Real. The co-founders of Adobe Systems both lived on Adobe Creek.
Marion B. Hollins was an American amateur golfer. She is known as an athlete and as a golf course developer, one of the only known female golf course developers in history. She won the 1921 U.S. Women's Amateur and was runner-up in 1913. She also had many other amateur wins. She was the captain of the first U.S. Curtis Cup team in 1932.
The Pacific Improvement Company (PIC) was a large holding company in California and an affiliate of the Southern Pacific Railroad. It was formed in 1878, by the Big Four, who were influential businessmen, philanthropists and railroad tycoons who funded the Central Pacific Railroad, (C.P.R.R.). These men were: Leland Stanford (1824–1893), Collis Potter Huntington (1821–1900), Mark Hopkins (1813–1878), and Charles Crocker (1822–1888). They owned the company, each with 25% interest. Archived records date from 1869 to 1931.
Pedro Joseph de Lemos was an American painter, printmaker, architect, illustrator, writer, lecturer, museum director and art educator in the San Francisco Bay Area. Prior to about 1930 he used the simpler name Pedro Lemos or Pedro J. Lemos; between 1931 and 1933 he changed the family name to de Lemos, believing that he was related to the Count de Lemos (1576–1622), patron of Miguel de Cervantes. Much of his work was influenced by traditional Japanese woodblock printing and the Arts and Crafts Movement. He became prominent in the field of art education, and he designed several unusual buildings in Palo Alto and Carmel-by-the-Sea, California.
The Hotel Del Monte was a large resort hotel in Monterey, California, from its opening in 1880 until 1942. It was one of the finest luxury hotels in North America. During World War II, it closed and the building was leased to the United States Navy. It first was used by the Navy as a school where enlisted men spent the second, third, and fourth months of an 11-month course being trained as electronic technicians. Later the Hotel Del Monte became the Naval Postgraduate School.
Jennie Amelia Vennerström Cannon, also known as Jennie Vennerstrom Cannon (1869–1952), was an American artist who spent most of her career in California but gained national recognition. She received the first master's degree from the Art Department at Stanford University, studied in New York with William Merritt Chase, whom she befriended and later persuaded to teach at Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, and received both the Elliott Bronze Medal and the Langdon Prize at the National Academy of Design. From her studio-homes in Berkeley and Carmel, California, her art was sent on traveling exhibitions across the United States. She was instrumental in founding the Carmel Art Association and the California League of Fine Arts in Berkeley. She championed women's equality in art communities across northern California. Her published art reviews appeared for decades in regional newspapers.
John H. Christie (1878–1960) was an American architect who worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad, and was the railroad's chief architect from 1924 to 1947.
Sydney Jones Yard was a 19th century American watercolor artist, known as one of the region's great painters, and the first professional artist to settle in the new community of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California.
The Pacific Art League (PAL), formally known as the Palo Alto Art Club was founded in 1921 in Palo Alto, California and is a membership-run nonprofit arts organization, school, and gallery. The group is located in a historic building at 668 Ramona Street in downtown Palo Alto.
El Carmelo Hotel was Pacific Grove's first hotel, opened to guests on May 20, 1887. It was sometimes called the sister of the Hotel Del Monte. It was located on Lighthouse Avenue between Fountain and Grand Avenues, Pacific Grove and owned by the Pacific Improvement Company (PIC). In 1907, the name of the hotel changed to the Pacific Grove Hotel. In 1917, the PIC decided to dismantle it and use the wood in the reconstruction of The Lodge at Pebble Beach, California that had burned down on December 17, 1917. The empty block was sold to W. R. Holman in 1919 to open the Holman Department Store.
Barnet Joseph Segal was an American businessman and early investor and banker in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. He helped start several financial institutions, including the Bank of Carmel and the Carmel Savings and Loan Association. He was "historically Carmel's most significant financier." Segal setup the Barnet J. Segal Charitable Trust to distribute his estate for the benefit of Monterey County, California.
Franklin Benjamin Porter, was a pioneer businessman and real estate developer of Monterey Peninsula. In 1926, he launched the first residential subdivision in Carmel Valley, California that became Robles del Rio, California. Porter went on to develop other properties in the valley including the Robles del Rio Lodge, Robles del Rio Carmelo Water Company, and the Hatton Ranch in Carmel Valley.
Mary Anne Hadden was an Irish-born American librarian. As the first director of the Monterey County Free Library, hired in 1913, Hadden established 126 branches of the library system, some of them housed in schools or private homes.
