Fortunate Fall is an anarcho-metal band from Inglewood, California. [1] They write, produce, and distribute all of their music in true DIY fashion through the indie label Riot Ready Records.

Contents

Founded in 2009, chief songwriter Wesley Richards has released all of the band's music under his label and recording studio Riot Ready Records [2] with founding members Nathan Evan Williams on drums and Paul Allen on bass. Fortunate Fall's style has several different elements of extreme metal while leaning heavily on melodic death metal and grindcore, and touch on topics such as working class rights and mental health. [3]

The band is known for their aggressive melodies and subject matter, but also for their DIY ethic and approach to production and touring. In addition to self-producing and distributing all of their releases under the indie label Riot Records Records, the band's two major tours were self-managed and funded as well. They released a number of early demos and splits with other metal bands from predominantly the LA-based metal scene developing a devout cult following among the LA area coastal cities, leading to the 2013 release of A Death Related Party,. [4] It was after this release that their reputation for chaotic, aggressive live shows began to spread, often opting to perform in the middle of the floor as opposed to the stage. Following the release of 2014's Camera Obscura, [5] the band embarked on their first coast-to-coast tour, again delivering their unique on-stage antics to the soundtrack of their aggressive high octane music but this time in front of a national audience. After the release of their third full-length album The Orange Scare in March 2017, they again embarked on a nationwide tour. They returned to LA and in 2018 to release their fourth full length release The Black Party.

Style

Fortunate Fall plays a blend of several musical styles, usually focusing in death metal and grindcore with elements of metalcore and powerviolence. Fortunate Fall lyrically focuses on far left and anarchist based sociopolitical commentar. Chief songwriter and producer Wesley Richards is a common contributor to several local Los Angeles anarchist outlets, and has been involved in numerous progressive activist movements. Richards draws from a number of eclectic influences, including southern California skate punk and the Houston underground hardcore scene, as well as underground death metal and grindcore. Several elements are prevalent throughout their releases, one of the most recognizable aspects being the high speeds at which they play, rarely stopping to catch their breath during an album or set.

Grindcore is an extreme fusion genre of heavy metal and hardcore punk that originated in the mid-1980s, drawing inspiration from abrasive-sounding musical styles, such as thrashcore, crust punk, hardcore punk, extreme metal, and industrial. Grindcore is considered a more noise-filled style of hardcore punk while using hardcore's trademark characteristics such as heavily distorted, down-tuned guitars, grinding overdriven bass, high-speed tempo, blast beats, and vocals which consist of growls and high-pitched shrieks. Early groups like Napalm Death are credited with laying the groundwork for the style. It is most prevalent today in North America and Europe, with popular contributors such as Brutal Truth and Nasum. Lyrical themes range from a primary focus on social and political concerns, to gory subject matter and black humor.

Scum (Napalm Death album) 1987 studio album by Napalm Death

Scum is the debut studio album by English grindcore band Napalm Death, released on 1 July 1987 by Earache Records. The two sides of the record were recorded by two different lineups in sessions separated by about a year; the only musician in both incarnations was drummer Mick Harris. The two sides are very different, and the two taken together serve to bridge stylistic elements of heavy metal and punk rock. While the songs on the A-side are influenced heavily by hardcore punk and anarcho-punk, the vocals and lower-tuned electric guitars on the B-side anticipate subsequent developments in extreme metal. Loudwire put it in the list of the best 10 metal album of 1987.

Michael John Harris is an English musician from Birmingham. He was the drummer for Napalm Death between 1985 and 1991, and is credited for coining the term "grindcore". After Napalm Death, Harris joined Painkiller with John Zorn and Bill Laswell. Since the mid-1990s, Harris has worked primarily in electronic and ambient music, his main projects being Scorn and Lull. Australian heavy metal music has its roots in both the Australian hard rock and pub rock tradition of the 1970s and the American and British heavy metal scenes. Since the mid-1980s, Australian heavy metal has been particularly influenced by foreign bands, particularly Swedish death metal, American thrash metal and black metal from Norway. Within Australia heavy metal has always remained part of the underground but since the mid-1990s many Australian metal acts have found widespread acceptance in overseas markets, particularly in Europe.

Even though punk genres at times are difficult to segregate, they usually show differing characteristics in overall structures, instrumental and vocal styles, and tempo. However, sometimes a particular trait is common in several genres, and thus punk genres are normally grouped by a combination of traits.

They are also notable for incessant touring beginning in the mid-1990s.
