Foto Na Dans (English: Photo After Dance) was a five piece Afrikaans progressive rock band from Bellville, South Africa, fronted by singer/songwriter Le-Roi Nel (vocals, guitar). Other band members are Neil Basson (lead guitar, vocals), John Havemann (bass), Alex Fourie (trumpet, keyboard), and Dirkie Uys (drums). [1]

Band formation

All of the band members beside Nel were previously in the band, Trompie Is Dood, [2] which won the national highschool Afrikaans rock band competition, Rockspaaider, in 2005. Some band members from Trompie Is Dood went their separate ways which left space for a vocalist; this position was later filled by LeRoi Nel. [3]

Collaborations

The song "Afrikaans" was released by Foto na Dans in collaboration with Flash Republic and is freely downloadable from the Dans Republic website. [4]

Third studio album

The third studio unnamed studio album was announced on the band's Facebook page. The band stated that they were busy in studio, that the first single would be available mid-April 2010 and that the CD would be released in mid-May. [5]

Indefinite hiatus

In January 2012, the band announced that they would be going on indefinite hiatus in order to pursue other musical avenues. They played three final farewell shows in February 2012 entitled "Die Laaste Dans" (English: The Final Dance). [6]

Awards and nominations

Their video for the single Soldaatvolk was nominated for Best Love Scene and for Best Video, while the band is nominated for Best Group in the 2008 MK Awards. [7] Foto Na Dans won the Best Group category after going up against the likes of The Parlotones, Springbok Nude Girls and Cassette.

Foto Na Dans was also nominated in 2008 for a SAMA (South African Music Award) for Best Afrikaans Rock Album for their debut album Intervensie. [8]

Oppikoppi Music festival in Limpopo, South Africa

Oppikoppi was a music festival held in the Limpopo Province of South Africa, near the mining town of Northam. The festival started off focusing mostly on rock music, but gradually added more genres and now plays host to a complete mixed bag of genres. Anything from jazz, world music, house music, acoustic, comedy and all else in between can be heard on one of the multiple stages. Each year in the first week of August - except for 2017, when the festival was held in October - thousands of people used to flock to the farm to camp out in the bush and enjoy the music for several days. The festival features mostly South African bands, although international acts are included in the line-up.

Riku Lätti, is a South African singer, songwriter and writer. After Riku matriculated in 1991 at Hoërskool Florida, Johannesburg, Gauteng Province, he studied philosophy at University of the Witwatersrand where he finished his honours degree. He changed his name to Victor S. Wolf and claimed that Riku Latti is "dead". Since then he composed the complete film score for Jans Rautenbach's film "Abraham" on which he was credited as Riku Lätti, thereby being effectively resurrected.

Kobus!

Kobus! is an Afrikaans extreme metal band formed in 2000 by ex-Springbok Nude Girls guitarist Theo Crous and ex-Voice of Destruction vocalist Francois Breytenbach Blom. They performed as a duo until 2004 when they were joined by Rob Nel on bass and Paul André Blom on drums.

Lark are a South African glitch electronica band from Cape Town. Formed in 2003, the group consists of Inge Beckmann (vocals), Paul Ressel, Simon "Fuzzy" Ratcliffe, and Sean Ou Tim. They are often cited as "groundbreaking musicians", who were the key contributors to establishing experimental and intelligent dance music in South Africa. Their name has become synonymous with musical experimentalism, and are one of country's best loved acts. Lark has released 3 studio albums, and won a SAMA for their debut album, Razbliuto!. Swaar Metaal is the third studio album by South African heavy metal band Kobus!, released on the independent record label Rhythm Records in March 2007. The ten-track album sees the band's founder-members, Francois Breytenbach Blom and Theo Crous breaking away from the previous two albums experimental approach and returning to their metal roots.

Ashton Nyte South African musician

Ashton Nyte is a South African-born singer, songwriter, producer, composer, author, actor, and frontman of the gothic rock band The Awakening. Nyte has released seven solo albums, in addition to ten albums as The Awakening and several other projects and collaborations. He is considered to be a pioneer of alternative music in South Africa, and has been described as "something of a musical genius" for his typical method of composing, playing and recording each instrument himself on most of his releases. Beast (South African band)

Beast is a garage rock supergroup from Cape Town. Formed in 2012, the band consists of Inge Beckmann (vocals) of Lark, Louis Nel and Rian Zietsman of Taxi Violence, and Werner von Waltsleben (drums) of Kobus!. BEAST's sound has been self-described as "psychological rock and roll" and a "four-nippled aberration".

Francois Henning, better known by his stage name Snotkop ([ˈsnɔtkɔp], and previously known as Lekgoa[ləkˈχo̯a], is a South African singer and rapper of Afrikaans.

Broers or alternatively Die Broers is a South African music group trio made up of Snyman brother Christo, Cobus and Stephan and formed in 2006. Broers had a big hit with "Huistoe" in 2008 for which they won "Best Song of the Year" in the Tempo Awards given annually by Huisgenoot popular Afrikaans magazine in South Africa. Their live DVD Broers Tussen die Sterre was nominated for the category "Best DVD of the Year". The band has its own publishing company SMP (Snyman-musiekproduksies).

Bittereinder (band) South African Rap band

Bittereinder is a South African rap/electro band from Pretoria who perform in Afrikaans. Jaco van der Merwe, Peach van Pletzen, and Louis Minnaar founded the three-man band in 2009, and have since performed at major South African festivals such as Oppikoppi, across southern Africa, and the Netherlands. They are known for their high-energy performances.
