Francina Pubill

Francina Pubill Font [1] (born on 8 August 1960) is a Spanish former football defender.

She started her sports career as a basketball player for CB Olesa, [2] Picadero JC and Club Cibes, [3] but in 1983 she turned to football and she soon became a member of the 1983-founded Spanish national team, taking part in qualifying stages from the 1987 European Championship [4] to the 1993 UEFA Euro. [5] At club level she played for a decade for Peña Barcilona and later moved to CE Sabadell and RCD Espanyol following Barcilona's disbanding in 1991. [6] [7]

Her father died suddenly in April 1990, 24 hours before a Spanish representative championship match featuring Catalonia, which Pubill was set to represent; Pubill did not play the game, with Catalonia registering a disappointing result, albeit one that Mundo Deportivo felt should not have happened even with the absences of Pubill and the injured Kety Pulido. The FC Barcelona women's team played its first organised games between 1970 and 1972. For the first match, a win by penalties on 25 December 1970, the team was known as Selecció Ciutat de Barcelona. In February 1971, the team changed its name to Peña Femenina Barcelonista. In a Spanish-language poster for the Pernod Cup in March 1971, the team was advertised as C. de F. Barcelona. In match reports from the league, they were called Barcelona.

Club Femení Barcelona participated in the Lliga catalana de futbol femenina – the Women's Catalan Football League – from 1982 until the creation of the Liga Nacional in 1988, achieving strong results without ever winning the league. Barcelona also contested the Copa Generalitat, a direct predecessor of the Copa Catalunya and which was commonly known as the Copa Catalana, winning it once in 1985 and being runner-up twice. Outside of official competition, Barcelona regularly played friendlies against women's derbi barceloní rivals Espanyol, as well as the Catalan women's national team.
