Francis du Heaume Le Gresley,MBE is a Jersey politician. He was a member of the States of Jersey between 2010 and 2014,after being first elected in the Jersey by-election of 2010. [1] Prior to his political career he was the manager of the Citizens Advice Bureau in Jersey. [2] He was the Minister for Social Security until 2014. [3]
Le Gresley first stood for election in June 2010,in a by-election for one seat,against eight other candidates including former-Senator Stuart Syvret,and Deputy Geoff Southern. Le Gresley topped the poll with 5,798 votes. The following year he held on to his seat,in the Jersey general election of 2011,receiving 14,891 votes. [4]
In April 2013,Le Gresley announce a change in the fees paid to local pharmacies by Jersey's Health Insurance Fund. A higher rate of £3.40 would be paid on the first 50,000 items dispensed in a year,starting on 1 May 2013. He said this would help smaller pharmacies become "more viable". [5] The estimated additional cost would be around £600,000.
Elections in Jersey take place for the States Assembly and at parish-level. Various parties have been formed over the years in Jersey,but few candidates stand for election affiliated to any political party. All elections in Jersey use the first-past-the-post voting system. In 2008,the voting age was reduced to 16 years.
Although the politics of Jersey has been largely based on independent parliamentary representatives,from time to time the island has had political parties. There are currently 4 active political parties in the island.
The Jersey Democratic Alliance was a political party in Jersey. JDA candidates contested general elections in 2005 and 2008 but announced in August 2011 that it would not be fielding candidates in the October 2011 elections.
Nia H. Gill is an American Democratic Party politician,who has represented the 34th Legislative District in the New Jersey State Senate since 2002. She ran unsuccessfully as a candidate in the June 2012 primary election to fill the seat in Congress left vacant by the death of Donald M. The 2011 Jersey general election was held on 19 October 2011 to elect 45 members of the States Assembly. This was the first time Senators,Deputies and Constables were elected on a single day in Jersey. The number of members of the States of Jersey was reduced from 53 to 51. Six Senators who had been elected in 2008 for a period of six years did not face election in 2011.
Alphonse Le Gastelois was an agricultural worker and fisherman from Jersey who lived in self-imposed exile on the Écréhous reef for 14 years after being wrongly accused of a string of sexual assaults on children. Fearing for his life,Le Gastelois felt compelled to leave Jersey to live on the small island six miles to the north east of Jersey,having been treated as a criminal and ostracised by many who lived on Jersey. Ten years later,on 10 July 1971,the real criminal,Edward Paisnel,nicknamed the Beast of Jersey,was caught and on 29 November 1971,was sentenced to jail for 13 attacks;this ended an 11-year reign of terror.
The 2022 Jersey general election was held on June 22 to elect the 49 members of the States Assembly.
