The Fédération Internationale d'Escrime, commonly known by the acronym FIE, is the international governing body of Olympic fencing. Today, its head office is at the Maison du Sport International in Lausanne, Switzerland. The FIE is composed of 155 national federations, each of which is recognized by its country's Olympic Committee as the sole representative of Olympic-style fencing in that country.
Mariel Leigh Zagunis is an American sabre fencer. She is a two-time Olympic champion in the individual sabre and the first American to win a gold medal in Olympic fencing. Luan Jujie is a Chinese-born Canadian fencer, born in Nanjing, China. At the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, she became the first Chinese athlete to win the gold medal in fencing. Since moving to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in 1985, she has become a Canadian citizen. At the age of 50, Luan represented Canada at the 2008 Summer Olympics. She has also participated in the 1988 and 2000 Summer Olympics.

After her retirement she became a fencing coach, then a sport administrator with numerous roles. Ilgar Yasharovich Mammadov is a Soviet and Russian of Azerbaijani origin who serves as President of the Russian Fencing Federation, and a former fencer. He is a two-time Olympic and one time world champion in team foil.
John Erle Fethers was an Australian fencer. He competed in six events at the 1952 Summer Olympics. He was a longstanding member and coach at the Melbourne-based VRI Fencing Club. On 10 October 2009 in recognition of a significant international fencing career, outstanding personal contribution to Australian fencing, and lasting legacy in the training and development of numerous coaches and Olympic athletes, he was inducted as a Living Legend to the VRI Hall of Fame.
Irene Vecchi is an Italian sabre fencer. She earned a bronze medal in the 2013 World Championships and 2017 World Championships, an individual bronze at the 2013 European Championships and won the team gold medal at the 2011 European Fencing Championships.
Nzingha Prescod is an American foil fencer, World Champion in foil at the 2008 and 2009 Cadet World Cups, bronze medalist at the 2015 World Fencing Championships, three-time medalist at the Pan American Games, and two-time Olympian. She has ranked as high as world # 5. Prescod was selected as an athlete director on the USA Fencing Board of Directors beginning in January 2021.
Mojtaba Abedini Shourmasti is an Iranian 3-time Olympian sabre fencer. In 2012, he became the first Iranian fencer to compete in the Olympics. He won a bronze medal at the 2019 World Fencing Championships, becoming the first-ever Iranian fencer to win a medal at the World Fencing Championships.
Aliaksandr Mikalayevich Buikevich is a Belarusian sabre fencer, European champion in 2008 and team silver medallist at the 2011 World Championships in Catania. At the 2008 Summer Olympics, he reached the quarter-finals in the individual sabre, losing to Romania's Mihai Covaliu, while the Belarusian sabre team also reached the quarter-finals. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he competed in the men's sabre, but was defeated in the table of 16 by Romania's Rareș Dumitrescu. The Belarusian team again reached the quarter-finals. Buikevich qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro as the only Belarusian fencer. In men's sabre in the table of 32 he defeated Joseph Polossifakis of Canada. He could not advance to the quarter-finals as in the table of 16 he lost to the eventual winner Áron Szilágyi of Hungary, who claimed his second consecutive gold medal at the Olympics individual men's sabre. Buikevich finished 12th in the event.
A number of deaf people have competed in the modern Olympic Games, with the earliest known being Oskar Wetzell, a Finnish diver who competed in the 1908 Olympics in London.
Macau sent a delegation to participate in the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, United Kingdom, from 29 August to 9 September 2012. This was the seventh appearance at a Summer Paralympic Games for the territory since its debut at the 1988 Summer Paralympics. A high jumper and a wheelchair fencer were chosen to represent Macau in London after the nation qualified one athlete by merit and the other by invitation. Wheelchair fencer In I Lao was nominated to be the territory's flag bearer for the opening ceremony. At the Paralympics, Lao came ninth in the group rounds of both the women's individual foil A and the women's individual épée A tournaments while high jumper Hio Sam Tong also finished in ninth in the men's long jump F20 event.
Noam Mills is an Israeli fencer, who competed in the individual women's épée event for Israel at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. She is a three-time junior Israeli champion in épée, and a four-time senior Israeli champion.
Amira Ben Chaabane is a Tunisian sabre fencer; gold medallist at the 2010 African Fencing Championships. She qualified to the individual event of the 2012 Summer Olympics as one of the best top-ranked fencers of the African zone. She was defeated 15-12 in the first round by Chen Xiaodong of China. In 2019, she won the African Fencing Championships again.
The Russian Fencing Federation is the governing body for the sport of fencing in Russia. It was created in 1992. FFR was formerly a member of the European Fencing Confederation, but its membership was suspended in 2023. It is a member of the Russian Olympic Committee. No Russian fencers will compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
