Frank Harold Cleobury (6 November 1892 - 25 March 1981) was British idealist philosopher and priest.
Cleobury was born in London. He joined the British Civil Service in 1908. He studied philosophy and theology and obtained his BA (1932) and PhD (1941) from University of London. [1] He was a conscientious objector and joined the Friends' Ambulance Unit. [2] In 1950, he retired from public service as a principal in the administrative grade. He became an ordained priest in the Church of England in 1951. [1] He was Rector of Hertingfordbury until his retirement in 1964. [1]
Cleobury was influenced by the idealism of A. E. Taylor, Bernard Bosanquet and F. H. Bradley. [1] He held the view that idealism was compatible with Christianity and provided a basis for religious belief. His book Christian Rationalism and Philosophical Analysis argued for a natural theology that was influenced by George Berkeley. [1] [3] [4] He used arguments from idealism to defend theism against "20th century philosophical analysis." [1] He wrote articles for The Philosopher , the journal of The Philosophical Society of England and served as President (1962-1977). [1]
In philosophy, empiricism is an epistemological view which holds that true knowledge or justification comes only or primarily from sensory experience and empirical evidence. It is one of several competing views within epistemology, along with rationalism and skepticism. Empiricists argue that empiricism is a more reliable method of finding the truth than purely using logical reasoning, because humans have cognitive biases and limitations which lead to errors of judgement. German idealism is a philosophical movement that emerged in Germany in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It developed out of the work of Immanuel Kant in the 1780s and 1790s, and was closely linked both with Romanticism and the revolutionary politics of the Enlightenment. The period of German idealism after Kant is also known as post-Kantian idealism or simply post-Kantianism. Karl Christian Friedrich Krause was a German philosopher whose doctrines became known as Krausism. Krausism, when considered in its totality as a complete, stand-alone philosophical system, had only a small following in Germany, France, and Belgium, in contradistinction to certain other philosophical systems that had a much larger following in Europe at that time. Dutch philosophy is a broad branch of philosophy that discusses the contributions of Dutch philosophers to the discourse of Western philosophy and Renaissance philosophy.
