The Lakota are a Native American people. Also known as the Teton Sioux,they are one of the three prominent subcultures of the Sioux people,with the Eastern Dakota (Santee) and Western Dakota (Wičhíyena). Their current lands are in North and South Dakota. They speak Lakȟótiyapi—the Lakota language,the westernmost of three closely related languages that belong to the Siouan language family.
The Sioux or Oceti Sakowin are groups of Native American tribes and First Nations people from the Great Plains of North America. The Sioux have two major linguistic divisions:the Dakota and Lakota peoples. Collectively,they are the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ,or "Seven Council Fires". Red Cloud was a leader of the Oglala Lakota from 1865 to 1909. He was one of the most capable Native American opponents whom the United States Army faced in the western territories. He led the Lakota to victory over the United States during Red Cloud's War,establishing the Lakota as the only nation to defeat the United States on American soil. The largest action of the war was the 1866 Fetterman Fight,with 81 US soldiers killed;it was the worst military defeat suffered by the US Army on the Great Plains until the Battle of the Little Bighorn 10 years later.
The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation,also called Pine Ridge Agency,is an Oglala Lakota Indian reservation located in the U.S. state of South Dakota,with a small portion of it extending into Nebraska. Originally included within the territory of the Great Sioux Reservation,Pine Ridge was created by the Act of March 2,1889,25 Stat. 888. in the southwest corner of South Dakota on the Nebraska border. It consists of 3,468.85 sq mi (8,984 km2) of land area and is one of the largest reservations in the United States.

The Great Sioux Reservation was an Indian reservation created by the United States through treaty with the Sioux,principally the Lakota,who dominated the territory before its establishment. The treaty also provided rights to roam and hunt in contiguous areas of North Dakota,Montana,Wyoming,and northeast Colorado.

Cecilia Fire Thunder is a nurse,community health planner and tribal leader of the Oglala Sioux. On November 2,2004,she was the first woman elected as president of the Tribe. She served until being impeached on June 29,2006,several months short of the two-year term. The major controversy was over her effort to build a Planned Parenthood clinic on the reservation after the South Dakota legislature banned most abortions throughout the state. The tribal council impeached her for proceeding without gaining their consensus.

The United States government illegally seized the Black Hills –a mountain range in the US states of South Dakota and Wyoming –from the Sioux Nation in 1876. The land was pledged to the Sioux Nation in the Treaty of Fort Laramie,but a few years later the United States illegally seized the land and nullified the treaty with the Indian Appropriations Bill of 1876,without the tribe's consent. That bill "denied the Sioux all further appropriation and treaty-guaranteed annuities" until they gave up the Black Hills. A Supreme Court case was ruled in favor of the Sioux in 1980. As of 2011,the court's award was worth over $1 billion,but the Sioux have outstanding issues with the ruling and have not collected the funds.
Kristi Lynn Arnold Noem is an American politician who has served since 2019 as the 33rd governor of South Dakota. A member of the Republican Party,she was the U.S. representative for South Dakota's at-large congressional district from 2011 to 2019 and a member of the South Dakota House of Representatives for the 6th district from 2007 to 2011. In November 2024,Donald Trump selected Noem to serve as Secretary of Homeland Security in his second term.
Lesbian,gay,bisexual,transgender,and queer (LGBTQ) people in the U.S. state of South Dakota may face some legal challenges not experienced by non-LGBTQ residents. Same-sex sexual activity is legal in South Dakota,and same-sex marriages have been recognized since June 2015 as a result of Obergefell v. Hodges. State statutes do not address discrimination on account of sexual orientation or gender identity;however,the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Bostock v. Clayton County established that employment discrimination against LGBTQ people is illegal under federal law.
Same-sex marriage has been legal in South Dakota since June 26,2015 when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Obergefell v. Hodges that the U.S. Constitution guarantees same-sex couples the right to marry. Attorney General Marty Jackley issued a statement critical of the ruling but said that the state would comply and recognize same-sex marriages. Previously,South Dakota had restricted marriage to the "union of a man and a woman" both by statute and in its State Constitution.

The COVID-19 pandemic in South Dakota is an ongoing viral pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19),a novel infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The state of South Dakota reported its first four cases and one death from COVID-19 on March 10,2020. On June 15,2021,South Dakota public health authorities reported 25 new cases of COVID-19,bringing the state's cumulative total to 124,377 cases. The state's COVID-19 death toll is 2,026,with no new deaths reported over the previous 24 hours. The state ranks 9th in deaths per capita among U.S. states,and 3rd in cases per-capita,behind only North Dakota and Rhode Island.
Red Dawn Foster is an American politician serving as a member of the South Dakota Senate from the 27th district,which encompasses the Pine Ridge Reservation as well as Bennett,Haakon,Jackson,Pennington and Oglala Lakota counties. Elected in November 2018,she assumed office on January 8,2019 and is the current incumbent.

Harold C. Frazier is an American politician and tribal leader who is the former chairman of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe,serving in that position since 2014. A member of the Democratic Party,Frazier serves concurrently as the chairman of the Great Plains Tribal Chairmen’s Association,a position he was elected to in 2018.
