The Parliament of Finland is the unicameral and supreme legislature of Finland, founded on 9 May 1906. In accordance with the Constitution of Finland, sovereignty belongs to the people, and that power is vested in the Parliament. The Parliament consists of 200 members, 199 of whom are elected every four years from 13 multi-member districts electing 6 to 37 members using the proportional D'Hondt method. In addition, there is one member from Åland.
Finnicization is the changing of one's personal names from other languages into Finnish. During the era of National Romanticism in Finland, many people, especially Fennomans, finnicized their previously Swedish family names.
Hertta Elina Kuusinen was a Finnish Communist politician. She was a member of the central committee (1944–1971) and the political bureau of the Communist Party of Finland; member of Finland's parliament, the Eduskunta (1945–1972); general secretary (1952–1958); and leader of the parliamentary group of the Finnish People's Democratic League.
Parliamentary elections were held in Finland on 16 March 2003. The Centre Party led by Anneli Jäätteenmäki overtook the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to become the largest party in the Eduskunta. This was credited mainly to Jäätteenmäki's powerful leadership and modernization of the party still often viewed as agrarian and conservative by many. However, the SDP actually won some seats and increased its share of the vote, losing in the number of total popular votes only by a few thousand.
The Iraq leak is a series of events that began on 6 March 2003 from a statement given by Anneli Jäätteenmäki, leader of the Finnish Centre Party, in a televised election debate prior to the 2003 parliamentary election. Jäätteenmäki accused Paavo Lipponen, the then Prime Minister of Finland, of attaching Finland to George W. Bush's 'coalition of the willing' that was in preparation for the 2003 war in Iraq. Lipponen had visited Washington on 9 December 2002.
Iiro Viinanen is a Finnish politician. Viinanen graduated as an engineer from a Tampere Institute in 1967 and as a Master of Science (Technology) from the Helsinki University of Technology in 1974. He was a Member of the Parliament of Finland (Eduskunta) from 1983 to 1996. He was a member of the National Coalition Party. He served as the Finland’s Minister of Finance from 1991 to 1996.
Reijo Mauri Matias Pekkarinen is a Finnish politician. He most recently served as a Member of European Parliament for Finland between 2019 and 2024. He is the Centre Party of Finland deputy and secretary, having served in various cabinet position in the Finnish government, including as Minister of Economic Affairs, Minister of Trade and Industry, and Minister of the Interior, as well as a member of parliament. He is known by the nickname "The Parliament Terrier".
Kimmo Kalevi Tiilikainen is a Finnish politician from the Centre Party. He is an organic farmer and forester. Tiilikainen served as the Minister of Agriculture and the Environment from 2015 to 2019. He is also a former Minister of the Environment of Finland from 2007 to 2008.
Juho Seppo Antero Eerola is a Finnish politician of the Finns Party. He was elected to the Finnish Parliament in the 2011 election. He is also a member of the city council of Kotka. In the True Finns' party conference of 2011 Eerola was elected as the party's second vice-chairman, and in the conference of 2013 he was elected as the third vice-chairman. Eerola is a former member of the nationalist organisation Suomen Sisu: he resigned his membership in 2012 when he felt that people outside the party were using the issue as a wedge against him and the party.
Arvi Einar Malmivaara was a Finnish Lutheran clergyman and politician. He was a member of the Parliament of Finland from 1935 to 1939, representing the Patriotic People's Movement (IKL). He was also active in the Lapua Movement.
Elsi Maria Hetemäki-Olander was a Finnish secondary school teacher and politician. She was a member of the Parliament of Finland from 1970 to 1991, representing the National Coalition Party. Hetemäki-Olander died on 3 December 2023, at the age of 96.
Eino Aarne Tuomivaara was a Finnish agronomist and politician. He served as Minister of Social Affairs from 4 July 1930 to 21 March 1931. He was a member of the Parliament of Finland, representing the Agrarian League from 1924 to 1930 and the Patriotic People's Movement (IKL) from 1933 to 1939 and again from 1941 to 1944 and finally, after the IKL was banned on 23 September 1944, as an Independent from 1944 to 1945.
Kustaa Aadolf Jussila was a Finnish politician. He was a member of the Parliament of Finland from 1936 to 1939, representing the Patriotic People's Movement (IKL). He was the elder brother of Eetu Jussila.
Leonard Typpö was a Finnish farmer and lay preacher, born in Rautio. He was a member of the Parliament of Finland from 1911 until his death in 1922, representing the Finnish Party from 1911 to 1918 and the National Coalition Party from 1918 to 1922.
Karl (Kaarlo) Fredrik Salovaara was a Finnish Lutheran clergyman and politician. He was a member of the Parliament of Finland from 1936 to 1939, representing the Patriotic People's Movement (IKL).
Yrjö Efraim Kivenoja was a Finnish Lutheran clergyman and politician. At first a member of the National Coalition Party, he later joined the Patriotic People's Movement (IKL), which he represented in the Parliament of Finland from 1933 to 1936.
Iisakki Elias Nikkola was a Finnish politician, born in Kurikka. He was a member of the Parliament of Finland as a representative of the Patriotic People's Movement (IKL) from 1933 to 1944, as an Independent from 1944 to 1945 and as a representative of the National Coalition Party from 1951 to 1952.
