Franz Xaver Zettler (1841-1916) was a German stained glass artist.

Early life

Zettler was born on 21 August in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, his father, Franz Xaver Zettler, was 27 and his mother, Ursula Oppenrieder, was 28. [1]

He was son-in-law of Joseph Gabriel Mayer (1808-83), founder of the Mayer firm. [2]

Career

He started his own stained glass design company in 1870. [3]

He designed some of the stained glass in the Deutsche Evangelische Christuskirche in Knightsbridge, London in 1904-1905. [4] He designed a window depicting The Crucifixion that today stands in Badin Hall. [5]

Personal life

He married Anna Mayer. They were the parents of at least 3 sons and 1 daughter. [1] His father-in-law, Joseph Mayer, was also a stained glass designer. [3]

Death

He died on 27 March 1916, in München, Bavaria, at the age of 74, and was buried in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. [1]

The firm was popular during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, and was the principal provider of stained glass to the large Roman Catholic churches that were constructed throughout the world during that period. Franz Mayer of Munich were stained glass artists to the Holy See and consequently were popular with Roman Catholic clients. Joseph von Baader was a German engineer and medical doctor, chiefly known for his role as a pioneer of railway transport in Bavaria, alongside Joseph Anton von Maffei and Theodor von Cramer-Klett. He was the brother of mining engineer and Catholic theologian Franz Xaver von Baader.
