The European Men's Handball Championship is the official competition for senior men's national handball teams of Europe and takes place every two years since 1994, in the even-numbered year between the World Championship. In addition to crowning the European champions, the tournament also serves as a qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games and World Championship. The most successful team is Sweden who have won five titles. Spain, however, have won most medals.

IFK Hässleholm is a Swedish football club from Hässleholm that was established in 1905. The team is currently playing in Division 2 Östra Götaland. Borlänge HK is a handball club in Borlänge in Sweden, established in 1947. The club won the Swedish women's national championship in 1970, 1973 and 1978. The women's team played 11 seasons in the Swedish top division between 1971–1972 and 1995–1996. and the men's team played in the Swedish top division during the 1984–1985 season. After winning Division 2 during the previous season, the women's team have advanced to Div 1 North as of season 2020–2021. The men's team won div 2 in 2022, and advanced to div 1 North from season 2023–2024.

Events from the year 1860 in Sweden
IK Heim were a Swedish handball club from Gothenburg, founded in 1923. They have been Swedish champions 7 times. They won the title in 1950, 1955, 1959, 1960 and 1962. They were relegated from the top level in 1965 and did not return until 1974. In 1980, Heim reached the semifinals of the Cup Winners' Cup, where they lost to Spanish club CB Calpisa. They won two more Swedish titles in 1982 and 1983, but were relegated again in 1984. In 2005, the club merged with Mölndal HF to form IK Heim Mölndal and later Mölndal/Heim. Heim Mölndal briefly played in the top division from 2005 to 2007. In 2009, Mölndal HF was re-founded as a separate club and Heim ceased to exist.
