Freedom North was a Canadian rock group that was active in the 1970s. Recording for Aquarius Records, they had hits with "Doctor Tom" and "Losing You".

Background

The group had evolved from a previous group called The Munks who were around from 1963 to around 1968. During that time they recorded three songs. [1] Now in the 1970s the new group was billing themselves as Freedom. They released their first single under that name. Some months later they were calling themselves Freedom North. The band consisted of Franki Hart, Bill Hill, Eddy Kaye, Graham Lear, Les Leroux and Rick St. Jean. [2]

Career

In 1970, their single "Dr. Tom" was released on the Aquarius label. [3] By August 1, it was at #20 on the RPM100 singles chart. [4] It was also at #2 on the MAPL Top 50 Canadian Chart. [5] It would eventually peak at #17. [6]

On August 24th, 1970 "Losing You" was at #47 in the MAPL Top 50 Canadian Chart. [7] With their single "Losing You" being a recent happening, the group was set to play two nights at the Spectrum, a coffee hose at Bishop's University for the week ending November 21, 1970. The establishment was suffering due to lack of patronage, and it was hoped that a major group like Freedom North would encourage students to attend and remedy the situation. It was also to be the first time a major group was to play at the venue. At the time, the group's line up consisted of lead guitarist Billy Hill, guitarist Rick St-Jean, vocalist Franki Hart, drummer Graham Lear and a bass player who was formerly with The Buddy Miles Express. Album

RPM Weekly wrote in the October 3 issue that Summerlea Music head, Brian Chater reported that a US release for "Losing You" was to be on the Scepter label. A simultaneous release for their album in Canada and the US was anticipated for the first part of October. [9] The album was released on Aquarius AQR 501 that year. All the tracks but one was composed by the band. The non-band composition "Hey Carmen" was composed by R. Boileau. [10] [11] Produced by Bill Hill for Much Productions, the musicians playing on the album were, Franki Hart on vocals, piano and recorder, Bill Hill on lead guitar, Rick St. Jean on vocals and rhythm guitar, Eddie Kaye on drums, and Les Leroux on Bass. Additional musicians were Ron Dann on pedal steel, Brian Wray on piano and horn arrangements, Rayburn Blake on guitar, Carl Watral, Mike Berman and Dave Classic on horns. [12]

Further activities

For the week ending, February 6, 1971, their single "Ordinary Man" had entered the RPM 100 Singles chart at #96. [13]

Post Freedom North

By 1973, Franki Hart was a member of the group, Riverson which also included Rayburn Blake and Brian Edwards who were from Mashmakhan, and Graham Lear. By February they had already played at the Place des Arts, the Grand Théâtre de Québec and in Toronto, and set to appear at the Drummondville Cultural Center on Thursday, February 8 at 8:30 a.m.. [14]

Graham Lear is an English-born Canadian rock drummer, best known for his time with Gino Vannelli, Santana and REO Speedwagon. He was born in Plymouth, United Kingdom.

Motherlode was a Canadian pop rock group formed in 1969 in London, Ontario. The group scored some success in the US with their single, "When I Die", which hit #1 in Canada and #18 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1969. The group didn't have a bass guitarist. William Smith would play the bass notes on his keyboard. They did however use bass players on their studio recordings.

"Dear Old Daddy Bill" was the third and final charting single for Canadian band Motherlode. Not having the success of the two previous releases, it was only a minor hit for the group.

Truck was a 1970s Canadian rock group with a musical style similar to Natural Gas and Lighthouse. Signed to the Capitol label, they released two singles and an album. The outfit started out as Sound Spectrum in 1966 and by the early 1970s they had absorbed experienced musicians from groups Natural Gas and Motherlode. Their name had also been changed to Truck! The 1970s lineup was completely different to what it was when the group began. A busy live attraction, they did reasonably well with their album Truck which had an unbroken run for about a month-and-a-half in the charts.

Natural Gas was a Canadian rock music group featuring a horn section. Consisting of eight members, it was formed by George Olliver. They released an album and a single in 1970. They had hit that year with "All Powerful Man". Their self-titled album also made the charts.


Brian Wray is a veteran Canadian musician. He has been a member of three major Canadian bands, Natural Gas in the late 1960s, Motherlode and Truck in the early 1970s. He has also worked with Lisa Hartt, Freedom North, Moe Koffman, David Johannesson and other artists. In later years he moved more towards the jazz genre.

Michael Curtis is a musician and composer. He was also a member of These Vizitors, Canadian group Truck, Crazy Horse and The Curtis Bros. He also co-wrote the hit "Southern Cross" which was recorded by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

Christopher Kearney is a Canadian singer and songwriter who kicked off his career after military service. He had a hit in 1970 with "Theme for Jody". He had more chart success with the single "Loosen Up".

The Regents were a Canadian group formed in 1959. They started out as a club band and then reformed as a recording band. They had a Top 20 hit with "Me and You".

Young was a Canadian rock music group led by Roger Plomish.They released a few singles and an album during the 1970s. They had success with "Goin' to the Country" which was a hit in both Canada and the United States. Their album also spent about 14 weeks in the charts. The group may have been working on a second album prior to their break up.


Tapestry was an early 1970s Canadian musical group fronted by singers Jack Winters, Heather Woodburn and Judy Harmon aka Judi Jensen. They released several singles and had a hit with "The Music Doesn't Seem to Be Going Anywhere". Some of their other singles also charted.

Life was a late 1960s/early 1970s Canadian musical group who had success with the top 20 hit, "Hands of the Clock". They also charted with a cover of the Beatles’ "Strawberry Fields Forever".
