Atlante was a 74-gun ship of the line of the Spanish Navy. She was acquired by France in 1801 and commissioned in the French Navy, being renamed to Atlas in 1803, serving in Santo Domingo and taking part in the Battle of Cape Finisterre. She was captured in Vigo at the outbreak of the Peninsular War.
Atlante was built in Cartagena, Spain by expatriate English designer Edward Bryant, and launched in 1754. In August 1801, on the background of the War of the Second Coalition, Spain ceded her to her ally France. Atlante was brought into French service and commissioned in Cádiz on 23 September 1801. [1]
In April 1802, she transferred to Toulon. [1] On 20 June 1802, Captain Lavillesgris took command, [3] and in August, she departed Toulon under to ferry troops to Santo Domingo, returning on 27 October. [1] She performed another trip in January 1803, ferrying 750 soldiers and General Jean Sarrazin. [1]
Atlante was renamed to Atlas on 4 February 1803. She took part in the Battle of Cape Finisterre under Captain Rolland, who sustained spectacular injuries when a powder reserve exploded near him. [4]
Moored in Vigo as a hospital ship after the battle, she was captured there by the Spanish on 9 June 1808 after the outbreak of the Peninsular War.
San Agustín was a 74-gun ship of the line built at the royal shipyard in Guarnizo (Santander) and launched in 1768.
Indivisible was a Tonnant-class 80-gun ship of the line of the French Navy.
Monarca was a 68-gun ship of the line of the Spanish Navy, ordered in 1754 to a design by expatriate British ship designer Richard Rooth and launched in 1756. She belonged to the four-ship Triunfante class.
Sensible was a 32-gun Magicienne-class frigate of the French Navy. The Royal Navy captured her in 1798 off Malta and took into service as HMS Sensible. She was lost in a grounding off Ceylon in 1802.
Jean-Jacques Magendie was a French Navy officer. He famously captained the flagship Bucentaure at the Battle of Trafalgar.
The Montañés class were an intended series of 74-gun ships of the line designed and built between 1792 and 1798 by Julián Martín de Retamosa for the Spanish Navy. However, only the first — the Montañés — was built to this design. Instead, Retamosa replaced this by an entirely new design for a longer 80-gun ship — design to which the Neptuno (1795) and Argonauta (1798) were built.
Alceste was a Magicienne-class frigate of the French Navy, launched in 1780, that the British seized at the Siege of Toulon. They transferred her to the Kingdom of Sardinia, but the French recaptured her a year later in the action of 8 June 1794. The British captured her again at the action of 18 June 1799 and took her into service as HMS Alceste. In 1801 she became a floating battery and she was sold the next year.
Santa Ana was a 112-gun three-decker ship of the line of the Spanish Navy, built to plans drawn by engineer Miguel de la Puente, following a specification issued by José Romero Fernández de Landa. Her actual constructor at Ferrol was Honorato Bouyón. She was the prototype and lead ship of the Santa Ana class, also known as los Meregildos, which were built during the following years at Ferrol and Havana and which formed the backbone of the Spanish Navy - the other ships were the Mejicano, Conde de Regla, Salvador del Mundo, Real Carlos, San Hermenegildo, Reina María Luisa and Príncipe de Asturias. Her dimensions were 213.4 Burgos feet long, 58 feet in the beam and a total tonnage of 2,112 tonnes.
Rayo was an 80-gun ship of the line of the Spanish Navy. As was traditional for Spanish ships not named after a saint, its second, dedicatory name was San Pedro Apóstol. She underwent rebuilding at Cartagena from 1803 to 1805, emerging as a three-decked ship with 100 guns. She then fought at the Battle of Trafalgar during the Napoleonic Wars and was dismasted as a result of damage sustained in the battle. When she sortied after Trafalgar in order to recover prizes, the warship was captured by the Royal Navy warship HMS Donegal. Subsequently, she ran aground and was wrecked in a storm, and her broken hull was burnt by Royal Navy sailors on 31 October.
San Francisco de Asis was a 74-gun ship of the line of the Spanish Navy launched in 1767 from the royal shipyard in Guarnizo, Cantabria. She was wrecked after the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 near Puerto de Santa Maria.
Bahama was a 74-gun ship of the line of the Spanish Navy. She was built in Havana on plans originally drawn by Ignacio Mullan for the 64-gun San Pedro de Alcantara, completed as a project of Gautier. She was later rebuilt as a 74-gun.
Mexicano was a 112-gun three-decker ship of the line built at Havanna for the Spanish Navy in 1786 to plans by Romero Landa. One of the eight very large ships of the line of the Santa Ana class, also known as los Meregildos. Mexicano served in the Spanish Navy for three decades throughout the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, finally being sold at Ferrol in 1815. Although she was a formidable part of the Spanish battlefleet throughout these conflicts, the only major action Mexicano participated in was the Battle of Cape St Vincent in 1797.
San Hermenegildo was a 112-gun three-decker ship of the line built at Havanna for the Spanish Navy in 1789 to plans by Romero Landa, one of the eight very large ships of the line of the Santa Ana class, also known as los Meregildos. San Hermenegildo served in the Spanish Navy during the French Revolutionary Wars and was destroyed with heavy loss of life during the Second Battle of Algeciras.
Reina Luisa was a 112-gun three-decker ship of the line built at Ferrol for the Spanish Navy in 1791 to plans by José Joaquín Romero Fernández de Landa. One of the eight very large ships of the line of the Santa Ana class, also known as Los Meregildos. The Reina Luisa served in the Spanish Navy for three decades throughout the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, finally being wrecked off Béjaïa in 1815. Although she was a formidable part of the Spanish battlefleet throughout these conflicts, she did not participate in any major operations.
Montañés was a 74 gun third-rate Spanish ship of the line. The name ship of her class, she was built in the Ferrol shipyards and paid for by the people of Cantabria. Following José Romero y Fernández de Landa's system under which the San Ildefonso class had been built, a new design was prepared by his successor, Julián Martín de Retamosa, to refine her buoyancy. She was launched in May 1794 and entered service the following year. With 2,400 copper plates on her hull, she was much faster than other ships of the same era, reaching 14 knots downwind and 10 knots upwind. It had been intended that future 74-gun ships should be built to her design, but instead Retamosa produced a fresh design for a longer 80-gun ship, to which the following Neptuno and Argomauta would be built.
The Spanish ship Argonauta was a 80 gun ship of the line of the Spanish Navy. She initially had 24, 18 and 8 pounder guns spread over her lower, upper, quarter and forecastle decks, but by 1805 she carried 36-pounders instead of 24-pounders. Her original crew was 21 officers and 642 ratings and soldiers, though it was 956 at the Battle of Cape Finisterre and 800 at Trafalgar.
Gaulois was a Téméraire-class 74-gun ship of the line of the French Navy.
Décius was a Société populaire-class corvette launched in 1795 in Brest. Originally named Doucereuse, she was renamed to Décius in 1795. The British Royal Navy destroyed her in November 1796.
San Justo was a 70-gun – from 1790, 74-gun – ship of the line built at the royal shipyard in Cartagena, Spain and launched in 1779.
