History

The organization was formed in 1992. [3]

Activities

The FEC has taken an active role in raising local awareness of the negative effects associated with tobacco smoking. Methods employed include organizing international conferences [4] and preparing studies detailing its economic, health and environmental effects. [5]

An annual event known as A Flower Each Spring is organized by the FEC to promote environmental awareness. [6] During the event, numerous field trips and fairs are held with the aim of acquainting participants with Qatar's local fauna. [7] The inaugural edition took place in 1999. [8]

In November 2012, a conference known as the Children's Conference on Climate Change (C4) was jointly launched by the FEC and Kainat Foundation. Operating in a similar manner to Model United Nations, the purpose of the event was to provide a platform for youth to discuss environmental problems and solutions. [9]

FEC, in partnership with South African company Sasol, launched the Qatar e-Nature application for smart phones in December 2013. Initially, the application only contained a database of the flora, birds and insects present within the country. Its database was updated in November 2014 to cover local mammals and reptiles. [10] In April 2015, the application was conferred the "Best Arab Government Smart Application" award at the Smart Government Awards. [11]

It was announced in May 2015 that the organization had released the first-ever field guide to birds in Qatar. The book contains information and depictions of 323 bird species that appear in the country. [12]

The nature reserve is among the most important wetlands for birds in South Africa despite being situated directly alongside the Zeekoevlei. A number of islands on the vlei act as vital breeding sites. Rondevlei is home to about 230 bird species, a variety of small mammals and reptiles like caracal, porcupine, Cape fox, grysbuck, steenbuck and mongoose, as well as a hippopotamus population which was re-introduced in 1981 as a means to control an alien grass species from South America, which had covered the shoreline and was threatening to engulf the vlei itself. It boasts unusual and threatened ecosystems like strandveld, sand plains fynbos, Cape lowland wetland vegetation and indigenous coastal fynbos vegetation with unique plants found nowhere else in the world.

Computational sustainability is an emerging field that attempts to balance societal, economic, and environmental resources for the future well-being of humanity using methods from mathematics, computer science, and information science fields. Sustainability in this context refers to the world's ability to sustain biological, social, and environmental systems in the long term. Using the power of computers to process large quantities of information, decision making algorithms allocate resources based on real-time information. Applications advanced by this field are widespread across various areas. For example, artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques are created to promote long-term biodiversity conservation and species protection. Smart grids implement renewable resources and storage capabilities to control the production and expenditure of energy. Intelligent transportation system technologies can analyze road conditions and relay information to drivers so they can make smarter, more environmentally-beneficial decisions based on real-time traffic information.

The wildlife of Bahrain is the flora and fauna of the archipelago of Bahrain. Apart from a strip of the north and west of the main island, where crops such as potatoes are grown with irrigation, the land is arid. With a very hot dry summer, a mild winter, and brackish groundwater, the plants need adaptations in order to survive. Nevertheless, 196 species of higher plant have been recorded here, as well as about seventeen species of terrestrial mammals, many birds and reptiles, and many migratory birds visit the islands in autumn and spring.

Cat predation on wildlife Interspecies animal behavior

Cat predation on wildlife is the result of the natural instincts and behavior of both feral and owned house cats to hunt small prey, including wildlife. Some people view this as a desirable phenomenon, such as in the case of barn cats and other cats kept for the intended purpose of pest control in rural settings; but scientific evidence does not support the popular use of cats to control urban rat populations, and ecologists oppose their use for this purpose because of the disproportionate harm they do to native wildlife. As an invasive species and predator, they do considerable ecological damage.
