Peus was born in Siegen and from 1923 to 1927 Peus studied zoology, botany and physics at the University of Münster. He received a doctorate in 1927 and specialized in blood-sucking Diptera. During the Third Reich, Peus was engaged as an Army entomologist and was employed in malaria research alongside Eduard May in Dachau. [1] He had joined the NSDAP party in 1940. Peus was later Director of the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin becoming curator of Diptera and Siphonaptera in 1949. He was also Professor for special zoology at the Humboldt University of Berlin and from 1962 up to his retirement in 1969 Professor of applied zoology at the Freie Universität Berlin.

Peus had a personal flea collection of nearly 9700 slides which included type specimens. He described two genera and nearly 66 species. This collection is now in the Muséum d’histoire naturelle de Genève. [2]

Friedrich Hermann Loew was a German entomologist who specialised in the study of Diptera, an order of insects including flies, mosquitoes, gnats and midges. He described many world species and was the first specialist to work on the Diptera of the United States.

Entomology, the study of insects, progressed between 1800 and 1850, with the publication of important texts, definition of new orders such as Aphaniptera and Strepsiptera, and the shift to specialization. The following timeline indicates significant events in entomology in this time period.

Sphaeroceridae are a family of true flies in the order Diptera, often called small dung flies, lesser dung flies or lesser corpse flies due to their saprophagous habits. They belong to the typical fly suborder Brachycera as can be seen by their short antennae, and more precisely they are members of the section Schizophora. There are over 1,300 species and about 125 genera accepted as valid today, but new taxa are still being described.
