General elections were held in Ghana on 18 June 1979, with a second round of the presidential election on 9 July 1979. The presidential election resulted in victory for Hilla Limann of the People's National Party, who received 62% of the votes in the run-off, whilst his PNP won 71 of the 140 seats in Parliament. According to one scholar, the elections were conducted "in as free and fair a manner as might be considered humanly possible under local conditions" and the losing candidates publicly accepted defeat. Around 5,070,000 people were registered to vote.

Brigadier Joseph Nunoo-Mensah is a Ghanaian soldier and politician. He is a former Chief of Defence Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces. He was also a member of the Provisional National Defence Council government which overthrew the government of Dr. Hilla Limann in 1981.

Christine Afrifa was a First Lady of Ghana and wife of Akwasi Afrifa. She worked in this office from April 1969 when her husband assumed office as head of state of Ghana to September 1969 when civilian rule was ushered in and Kofi Abrefa Busia took over as Prime Minister of Ghana. She married Akwasi Afrifa in 1968. Following her husband's death in 1979, she moved to the United Kingdom. A road in Accra is named in her honour. During the National Reconciliation Commission (NRC), she appeared and requested to know who authorised the execution of her husband in 1979. She also appealed to the Commission to de-confiscate her husband assets as well as a prompt action on the Greenstreet Report that recommended benefits for Ex-Presidents and Heads of State.
Joseph Kwame Kingsley-Nyinah was a Ghanaian judge who served as a justice of the Court of Appeal and also as the Electoral Commissioner for Ghana.
S. K. Riley-Poku is a Ghanaian lawyer, educationist and politician. He was the Minister for Defence of Ghana between 1979 and 1981.
Francis Kwame Buah was a Ghanaian historian, educationist, author and politician. He was the Minister for Education of Ghana between 1980 and 1981 and the Minister for Trade and Tourism prior to that. He authored a number of history text books.
