Full-body workout is a type of exercise workout routine where the entire body is targeted in a single session. It is the opposite of a split workout routine, also known as split weight training or split routine, where different muscle groups are targeted on separate days. [1]
During the Bronze Era of bodybuilding, traditionally dated from the late 19th century to the end of the 1930s, bodybuilders favored full-body routines, working out multiple muscle groups in a single session. Workouts were also done multiple times a week, emphasizing compound movements. [2] The bodybuilder Eugen Sandow (1867-1925) emphasised full-body workouts, progressive overload, and simple dietary choices. [3] [4] [5]
Back in the 1950s and 1960s, full body workouts were the normal way to train, and bodybuilders such as John Grimek (1940-41 Mr. America), Steve Reeves (Mr. America of 1947, Mr. World of 1948, and Mr. Universe of 1950), George Eiferman (Mr. America of 1948, and Mr. Universe of 1962), Armand Tanny, Reg Park (Mr. Universe of 1951, 1958, and 1965), and Leroy Colbert (Mr. Eastern America of 1953), normally trained the whole body during their workouts. Regarding the advantages of exercising the entire body in a single session, Steve Reeves stated, "When you work your whole body in each workout, it forces you to think about symmetry. Your focus is always on the whole and not the parts". [12]
Bodybuilding is the practice of progressive resistance exercise to build, control, and develop one's muscles via hypertrophy. An individual who engages in this activity is referred to as a bodybuilder. It is primarily undertaken for aesthetic purposes over functional ones, distinguishing it from similar activities such as powerlifting and calisthenics.
The Universe Championships are annual worldwide bodybuilding events organised by the British National Amateur Body-Builders' Association (NABBA). Originally promoted as the Mr. Universe contest, the event was expanded to include women's classes in 1968. Stephen Lester Reeves was an American professional bodybuilder and actor. He was famous in the mid-1950s as a movie star in Italian-made sword-and-sandal films, playing the protagonist as muscular characters such as Hercules, Goliath, and Sandokan. At the peak of his career, he was the highest-paid actor in Europe. Though best known for his portrayal of Hercules, he played the character only twice: in Hercules (1958), and in its 1959 sequel Hercules Unchained. By 1960, Reeves was ranked as the number-one box-office draw in 25 countries.
Eugen Sandow was a German bodybuilder and showman from Prussia, using the Bulgarian last name Sandow as a pseudonym. Born in Königsberg, Sandow became interested in bodybuilding at the age of ten during a visit to Italy.
William Arnold Pearl was an American professional bodybuilder and athlete. During the 1950s and 60s, he won many titles and awards, including winning the Mr. Universe contest five times, and was named "World's Best-Built Man of the Century". He later became an expert trainer and author on bodybuilding.
Samir Bannout is a Lebanese former professional bodybuilder and commentator. Nicknamed 'The Lion of Lebanon', he won the 1983 Mr. Olympia, defeating Mohamed Makkawy and Lee Haney. He is the first Middle Eastern bodybuilder to win a Mr. Olympia title.
Roy "Reg" Park was an English bodybuilder, businessman, and actor. His first title was Mr. Britain in 1949. He then won Mr. Universe in 1951, 1958, and 1965. He went on to star in five films, all of which featured him playing Hercules. Later in life, he received renewed interest for being the first inspiration to Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Robby Robinson is an American former professional bodybuilder. Known early in his career as Robin Robinson, he is also known as The Black Prince and Mr Lifestyle. He won various competitions including Mr America, IFBB Mr. World, Mr Universe, Masters Olympia, and other titles of the International Federation of BodyBuilding & Fitness (IFBB), and appeared in several films over a 27-year career as a professional bodybuilder, retiring from competition in 2001 at the age of 55.
Thomas Steven Platz is an American retired professional bodybuilder. He was known for his leg development, which in his prime measured over 30 inches, earning him the nickname The Quadfather.
Lee Andrew McCutcheon , known professionally as Lee Priest, is a competitive bodybuilder. He is a former International Federation of BodyBuilders (IFBB) professional bodybuilder and a current National Amateur Body-Builders' Association (NABBA) professional athlete.
Vincent Anselmo Gironda was an American professional bodybuilder, personal trainer, author, co-founder of the supplement company NSP Nutrition, and owner of the celebrity-frequented Vince's Gym. As a competing bodybuilder, he placed second in the 1951 Mr. America contest. His nickname was the "Iron Guru".
John Carroll Grimek was an American bodybuilder and weightlifter active in the 1930s and 1940s. Grimek was Mr. America in 1940 and 1941, and Mr. Universe in 1948. In 1949, he won his last contest, the AAU Mr. USA, against a field that included Steve Reeves, Clarence Ross, George Eiferman, and Armand Tanny. Grimek retired from bodybuilding undefeated. Throughout his career he carried the nicknames "the Monarch of Muscledom" and "the Glow."
George Eiferman was an American professional bodybuilder and trainer. Born in Philadelphia in 1925, he served in the Navy during World War II and entered into the sport of bodybuilding afterwards. Known for his size and definition, particularly his shoulders, pecs, and arms, he won the Mr. Philadelphia competition in 1947, the AAU Mr. America competition in 1948, and the Mr. Universe in 1962. He was inducted into the IFBB Hall of Fame in 2000.

In the same period, the country was involved with the early internationalization of the sport. The sport had a golden age during the 1960s and 1970s when much of the activity was taking place on the west coast. Bodybuilding for women began to take off during the 1970s. A number of changes took place in the 1980s.
Leroy Colbert was an American bodybuilder. He is notable as being credited as the first man to develop 21-inch-circumference arms. He was a traditionalist using full body workouts with a mini push/pull, where you a pushing exercises following by a pulling exercise. This also applied to legs don't do a quadricep exercise followed by another quadricep exercise. Leroy said you are not giving the muscle enough rest when you train it back to back. He and along with his friends such as Marvin Eder in their youth pioneered many of the principles bodybuilders today use. An example of these principles were the 21 curls where you do 7 curls to perpendicular, 7 curls perpidicular to chest and 7 full curls. Another example of Leroy's principle was the priority principle, where the muscle you train first will grow biggest because you put the most energy in the beginning of the workout. It was also to be paired with the saturation principle where the first exercise you do the most sets to saturate it with blood. Lastly, Leroy and his friends also pioneered the tri and quadra sets in a Bicep,Tricep,Bicep....etc. style.
