Gabriel Issa

Gabriel Naoum Issa (born 15 March 1957) is a Lebanese-American businessman, politician and diplomat currently serving as Lebanon ambassador to the United States. [1]

Early life and education

Issa was born in Lebanon and he is a Maronite Christian. In 1975, Issa immigrated to the United States at the age of 18 and settled in Detroit among large Lebanese-American community. [2] He was educated at the Detroit Institute of Technology where he obtained a bachelor of science degree in Civil Engineering in 1980.

Career

While still studying Civil Engineering, Issa established two businesses, AAA Language Services and Interotext Translation Services based in Bloomfield in March 1978. The company translated General Motors car manual from English to other foreign languages. He later founded other businesses including AAA International Group incorporated in May 1997, and Joules International registered in January 2009. [2] While conducting his businesses in the US, Issa was actively involved in Lebanese politics supporting Free Patriotic Movement, (FPM) party which is one of the two large Christian parties in Lebanon.

Issa returned to Lebanon in 2016 after 40 years in the US ahead of the 2016 presidential election to support his long term associate Michel Aoun who went on to win the presidential election. Issa was appointed Lebanon ambassador to the US by president Michel Aoun in July 2017 and presented his letter of credence to the US president Donald Trump in the Oval Office in January 2018 [3] succeeding Antoine Chedid who served from 2007 to 2016.

A series of rounds in the Lebanese presidential election were held from 23 April 2014 until 31 October 2016. No candidate reached a two-thirds majority vote in the first round, and subsequent rounds failed to gain a quorum. Finally, in the second round of the forty-sixth session held on 31 October 2016, Michel Aoun, a Member of Parliament and formerly a disputed Prime Minister and Acting President in a rival government near the end of the Lebanese Civil War, was elected with 83 votes in Parliament. The agreement paved the way for the election of Michel Aoun as president in October that year.

The War of Elimination or War of Attrition was an inter-Christian military conflict, within the final phase of the Lebanese Civil War, that took place in late January 1990, between the Lebanese Army, led by General Michel Aoun and the Lebanese Forces led by Samir Geagea, where hundreds were killed and thousands injured. The confrontation ended with the Syrian army invading the Christian areas, the exile of Aoun to France, and Geagea's 11 years imprisonment. This marked the end of the civil war, and as some believe, the Christians losing the war.

The 2022–2023 Lebanese presidential election is an ongoing indirect election to elect the president of Lebanon following the expiration of term-limited incumbent Michel Aoun's mandate on 31 October 2022. The outgoing president has served since 31 October 2016, following the end of the 2-year presidential crisis.
