Gadens is an Australian law firm which operates in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide. [1] The firm also offers services in Perth through Lavan Legal and in Launceston through Rae & Partners. [2] [3] It specialises in corporate and commercial law, property transactions, debt recovery and banking. [2] [4]

History

Gadens' history dates back to 1847. [2] It was the first Australian law firm to establish a multi-disciplinary practice.[ citation needed ] It has previously had an office in Papua New Guinea. [5]

In 2011, the Brisbane office poached 13 property lawyers from Norton Rose, increasing its size to 30 partners and 270 staff. [6]

In 2013, the Sydney office of Gadens was ordered to pay almost $5 million in damages to Aussie Home Loans founder John Symond for negligent tax advice. Gadens appealed the ruling and got more than $1 million back. [7]

In 2015, Gadens allied with US/China giant Dentons and Singapore firm Rodyk & Davidson to share branding, strategy and information technology. [8] In 2016, Gadens split when its then Sydney and Perth offices joined Dentons. [9]

Philip Antony Jeyaretnam is a Singaporean judge, lawyer and author who has been serving as a Judge of the High Court of Singapore since 1 November 2021, having been first appointed to the Bench as a Judicial Commissioner on 4 January 2021. He has served as President of the Singapore International Commercial Court since 2 January 2023. Prior to his appointment to the Bench, he served as ASEAN chief executive officer and global vice-chair at Dentons. He also served as President of the Law Society of Singapore between 2004 and 2007. Jeyaretnam was also one of the youngest lawyers to be appointed Senior Counsel in 2003 at the age of 38.

Peter Charles Paire O'Neill is a Papua New Guinean politician who served as the seventh Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea from 2011 to 2019. He has been a Member of Parliament for Ialibu-Pangia since 2002. He is a former cabinet minister and the former leader of the People's National Congress between 2006 and 2022. He resigned his position as prime minister to avoid a vote of no confidence and he was succeeded by James Marape. O'Neill won re-election to the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea in 2022 in the first round with a large majority, which is unusual in the country.
