A seven-storey building under construction in Bengaluru, India, belonging to N. Gangaram, collapsed on 12 September 1983 resulting in 123 dead and over 120 injured. [1] This building collapse is considered as one of the worst tragedies of Bangalore city.[ citation needed ]
The seven-storey building, which was going to be a hotel and shopping complex, was located next to Kapali Cinema theatre on Subedar Chatram Road, near the Majestic area. Construction had started in 1981. On 12 September 1983 at 3.25 pm, [2] the building collapsed, killing construction workers, customers of the nearby Gangaram bookstore, pedestrians and two people who were watching cinema in an adjacent theatre. [3] Deaths totaled 123 and there were over 120 injured. [3] The son of N. Gangaram, the owner of the building, was among the dead: his body was not found until the 30th day of rescue work. [4]
During the 1980s, rescue work was a challenge as both technology and techniques were primitive.[ citation needed ] In addition to the rescue work done by Fire brigade officials, police officials, and volunteers, about 30 mining labourers from Kolar Gold Fields were also involved. The rescue work continued, requiring 34 days, and bodies were recovered out of the collapsed building daily. [1]
The State Government ordered a judicial enquiry and the owner of the building and three contractors were arrested. [3] One reason for the collapse was identified as "structural violations". [5] Charges were filed against Gangaram and contractors, but all six accused were acquitted by Karnataka High Court on 22 February 2005. The court observed that the witnesses were not properly cross-examined by the prosecution. [3]

The Suryanelli rape case refers to a case of kidnapping and subsequent rape of a 16-year-old school girl from Suryanelli, Kerala, India, in 1996. The girl was allegedly lured with the promise of marriage on 16 January 1996 and kidnapped. She was allegedly raped by 37 of the 42 accused persons, over a period of 40 days. The collapse of the Royal Plaza Hotel occurred on 13 August 1993 in the city of Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat) in Thailand, killing 137 people and injuring 227. Taking just less than 10 seconds, the building collapsed and transformed the 6-storey complex into a pile of rubble, leaving only the front elevator hall which was separately built from the rest of the structure. Gradual deformation due to creep weakened all the ground floor support columns and when one failed the rest rapidly followed, resulting in an almost complete vertical collapse. Several people were rescued from the rubble and trapped victims called for help using mobile phones. Violation of safety regulations and an unprofessional approach on the part of the engineer were deemed to be the cause of the disaster. Police arrested the owner of the building and five others. Rescue operations continued for more than 20 days, until 3 September. It is one of the most fatal and disastrous man-made accidents in Thai history.
