Garrett Smith (born December 14, 1967) is an American former soccer defender who played professionally in the Western Soccer League, American Professional Soccer League, Major Indoor Soccer League and Continental Indoor Soccer League. Since 1992, he has served as an assistant coach with the University of Portland's men's and women's soccer teams. In 2003, he became the head coach of the women's team, winning the 2005 National Championship. He was 2007 NCAA Coach of the Year.

High school and college

Smith attended Nathan Hale High School where he played on the school's soccer team while also playing with the Washington State U-19 State team. He then attended the University of Portland where he played on the men's soccer team under Clive Charles from 1986 to 1989. Smith was a 1989 first team All-West Coast Conference and a three time All-Northwest Collegiate Soccer Conference selection. The most Notable team of that era was the 1988 team which went 22–1, their only loss being a 1–0 loss in the semi-finals to eventual NCAA champions Indiana.

Professional

While still in college, Smith played a single season with the Portland Timbers of the Western Soccer League in 1989. [1] In 1990, he signed with the Seattle Storm of the American Professional Soccer League. [2] On November 23, 1990, he signed with the San Diego Sockers of the Major Indoor Soccer League. [3] When his contract expired at the end of the season, Smith left professional soccer. On April 28, 1993, the Portland Pride of the Continental Indoor Soccer League drafted Smith. [4] He retired from professional soccer after the 1995 season.

Coaching

In 1992, Smith was hired by the University of Portland as an assistant coach to Clive Charles for the women's soccer team. When Charles died from cancer in 2003, Smith was promoted to head coach. In 2005, he led the team to the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship. In 2007, he was named the NCAA Coach of the Year. In addition to his duties as head coach for the Pilot's women's team, Smith has served as the university's associate director for soccer since 2003. On November 7, 2017, Garrett Smith was let go by the University of Portland and was replaced by ex-US National Team player and former US Women's National Team assistant coach Michelle French. [5]

John Bain is a Scottish retired soccer midfielder who currently coaches youth soccer in the United States. Bain began his professional career in England before moving to the United States in 1978. Over his twenty-year playing career, Bain played for numerous leagues and teams, both indoors and out. After retiring from playing professionally, he has coached at the professional, youth club and high school levels in the US.

Robert "Rob" Baarts is a Canadian retired soccer player who played as a forward. He is currently the head coach of the New Mexico State University women's soccer team.

Wade Webber is an American soccer coach and former player who spent most of his career with clubs in the Pacific Northwest. However, he did see three years in Major League Soccer with the Dallas Burn and Miami Fusion before suffering a career ending knee injury. He is currently head coach of MLS Next Pro club Tacoma Defiance.

Greg Maas is a retired U.S. soccer goalkeeper who spent his entire professional career in Portland. He was the head coach of the Utah Valley University men's soccer team, starting the program from scratch. The team begins play in 2014 and competes in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). Utah Valley has the only NCAA Division I men's soccer program in the state of Utah. He now serves as an academy coach mentor and senior boys and girls director of goalkeeping for the Washington Timbers a founding member of the Portland Timbers Alliance.

Joe Leonetti is a former U.S. soccer player. He played for numerous soccer teams over a career which began in 1988 with F.C. Portland and ended in 1999 with the Willamette Valley Firebirds. He also earned two caps with the U.S. national team in 1992 and 1996.

Neil Megson is a soccer coach and former player who coaches youth soccer. A midfielder, he played two seasons in the North American Soccer League, nine in Major Indoor Soccer League, one in the Continental Indoor Soccer League and six in the USL First Division and its predecessors. He served as head coach to the Seattle Sounders for five seasons, winning the 1995 A-League championship and being named the 2000 USL Coach of the Year. Born in England, he earned two caps with the U.S. national team in 1988. He is the brother of former West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield Wednesday manager Gary Megson.

Billy Crook is a former U.S. soccer defender who spent two seasons in the North American Soccer League, eight in Major Indoor Soccer League, two in the Western Soccer Alliance, at least two in the Continental Indoor Soccer League, and four in the American Professional Soccer League. He also earned one cap with the U.S. national team. He currently coaches youth soccer in Sumner, Washington.

Dick McCormick is a former American soccer player and current youth soccer coach. McCormick played as a midfielder in six indoor and outdoor leagues over his fourteen-year professional career. He has served as an assistant coach with the Seattle Sounders and head coach of the Sounders W-League women's team in the 2000s. He is currently the Director of Coaching with the Crossfire Premier soccer club.
