When Republicans gained control of the state senate in 2000,Williams was chosen as President of the Senate,and held that post continuously until his resignation in November 2012. In September 2010,he announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for governor in the 2011 gubernatorial election. On May 17,2011,Williams secured the Republican nomination over Tea Party movement-backed Phil Moffet. However,he lost the general election by twenty points to incumbent Democratic Governor Steve Beshear. In November 2012,Williams resigned his Senate seat to accept a circuit court judgeship.

Saunders was first elected to the senate in a November 1986 special election following the resignation of incumbent senator Danny Yocom. He was defeated for the Democratic nomination for a full term in 1998 by Dan Seum. Saunders defeated Seum in a rematch in 1992,and served until he retired from the senate in 2004.
John David Preston is an American politician from Kentucky who was a member of the Kentucky Senate from 1994 to 1997. Preston was elected to the senate in a March 1994 special election following the resignation of incumbent Democratic senator David LeMaster. In 1996 redistricting moved his native Johnson County to the 29th senate district,where he lost to incumbent Democratic senator Benny Ray Bailey. At other points in his career Preston has been a Commonwealth's Attorney,member of the Paintsville City Council,mayor of Paintsville,and a judge of the 24th Circuit Court.
Kelsey Evans Friend Sr. was an American politician from Kentucky who was a member of the Kentucky Senate from 1972 to 1980 and 1984 to 1997. Friend was first elected to the senate in 1971. He was defeated for renomination in 1979 by John Doug Hays. Friend challenged Hays again in 1983,defeating him. Friend was defeated again for renomination in 1996 by Gary C. Johnson.
