Gary Lewis (born in 1967) is an outdoor writer, author and TV host residing in Bend, Oregon.
Lewis was raised in southwest Washington (Kalama and Vancouver) before moving to the outskirts of Oregon City at the age of 19. At the age of 20, Lewis married his wife, Merrilee. The couple lived in the Willamette Valley until 1994. Lewis and his wife, Merrilee, currently reside in Central Oregon with their three daughters.
He began his outdoor writing career in 1995 with a story published in American Bowhunter. In 1996, The Bend Bulletin newspaper began to publish his column. His first book, Sun Publishing's Hunting Oregon, was published in 1999.
In 2009, Lewis, in cooperation with producer Brad Douglas, began a TV show called Gary Lewis’s High Desert Outdoorsman, which aired on affiliate stations in Oregon, northern California, Idaho, Alaska and Wyoming.
In 2010, Lewis re-branded his TV Show to Gary Lewis’s Adventure Journal in cooperation with producer Eli Pyke.
In 2014, with producer Samuel Pyke, of Hillshadow Pictures, Lewis changed the name of the show to Frontier Unlimited, still in production (December 2017). The TV show is accessed on Pursuit Channel (United States, United Kingdom) and Hunt Channel (United States, Mexico, Canada) and on a Northwest regional network (Portland, Bend, Salem, Eugene). The show was also picked up in 18 Russian-speaking countries and airs in the Russian language.
Lewis has written, or contributed to, 16 books. He has hosted three DVDs.
Lewis has hunted and fished in seven countries and across the United States. An international hunter, one of his favorite destinations is Africa. Here is a quote from a story he wrote for ESPN: [1] "As the sun rose, the ground sparkled with golden mica and quartz. Dry river canyons cut through the hills, and game trails led in and out of the brush. Unlike the Kalahari, which I had glimpsed from the airplane, here the vegetation was thick. Almost every bush and tree had thorns.
"In the early light, gemsbok, hartebeest and kudu were easily spotted by the reflection of sunlight on horn. We stopped to glass on top of one hill, and a troop of baboons took off running along the road below us."
He is twice past President of the Northwest Outdoor Writers Association (NOWA). He was honored with NOWA's Enos Bradner award for 2009 (May 2010).
Lewis was also Associate Producer for Scott Linden Outdoors radio, heard on 150 stations around the country.[ citation needed ]
Lewis is a columnist for The Bend Bulletin , a Contributing Editor for Successful Hunter magazine and a humor columnist. His articles have appeared in Sports Afield, Alaska Airlines' Alaska Beyond, Horizon, Game & Fish magazines, Salmon Trout Steelheader, Oregon Hunter, American Handgunner, Surplus Vintage & Classic Firearms, Bear Hunting Magazine, Fish Alaska, Sportsman's News, MDF, Covey Rise, Flyfishing and Tying Journal and many others.

Lewis, through his association with other outdoor writers, met long-time writer Ed Park, a frequent contributor to Outdoor Life, Field and Stream, Sports Afield and other publications. Lewis and Park were good friends from 1999 through 2008, when Ed Park died. Lewis counts Ed Park, Bob Nosler and John Nosler (Founder of Nosler, an ammunition and hand-loading manufacturer) his mentors.
Richard Neil "Dick" Cabela was an American entrepreneur, best known as a co-founder of Cabela's, a leading outfitter of outdoor sporting and recreational goods. He stated that his business was inspired by his bout with polio and a deep love of hunting and fishing. He was also described as "a vocal supporter of the National Rifle Association of America" and a hunter who decorated his home with taxidermic wildlife.
Cabela's Inc. is an American retailer that specializes in hunting, fishing, boating, camping, and other outdoor recreation merchandise. The chain was founded by Richard N. Cabela and Jim Cabela in 1961. Cabela's was acquired by Springfield, Missouri-based Bass Pro Shops in 2017 and has been a subsidiary since then. The brand’s retail locations feature wildlife exhibits and outdoor designs, and are viewed as tourist attractions.
The Woolly Bugger is an artificial fly commonly categorized as a wet fly or streamer and is fished under the water surface. It is a popular and widely used pattern for both freshwater and saltwater game fish and is generally listed as one of the top patterns to have in any fly box. John Gierach, a noted fly fishing writer discussed the Woolly Bugger first in his chapter on streamers in Good Flies. Woolly Buggers are typically fished in streams, rivers, ponds, lakes, and tidal flats. Today, Woolly Buggers are tied in a wide variety of styles and colors to imitate a wide range of game fish prey.
The Woolly Bugger is so effective, it should be banned from some watersheds. I suspect its effectiveness is due to its resemblance to so many edible creatures in the water—nymphs, leeches, salamanders, or even small sculpins. Its tail undulating behind a fiber, bubble-filled body is just too much for most fish to resist. It just looks like a meal!
Outdoor Life is an outdoors magazine about camping, fishing, hunting, and survival. It is a sister magazine of Field & Stream. Together with Sports Afield, they are considered the Big Three of American outdoor publishing by Money magazine. Outdoor Life was launched in Denver, Colorado, in January 1898. Founder and editor-in-chief (1898–1929), J. A. McGuire, intended Outdoor Life to be a magazine for sportsmen, written by sportsmen, covering all aspects of the outdoor arena.
Sports Afield (SA) is an American outdoor magazine headquartered in Huntington Beach, California. Founded in 1887 by Claude King as a hunting and fishing magazine, it is the oldest published outdoor magazine in North America. The first issue, in January 1888, was eight pages long; it was printed on newspaper stock and published in Denver, Colorado. The magazine currently publishes six print issues per year as well as a digital edition, with an editorial focus on worldwide big-game hunting and conservation. In addition to publishing the magazine, Sports Afield licenses its name to branded products including safes, clothing, outdoor equipment, a TV show, and real-estate marketing. Sports Afield is one of the “Big Three” in American outdoor magazines together with Field & Stream and Outdoor Life, and is the only one published in a printed edition currently.

Claude Hamilton Gresham Jr., better known as Grits Gresham, was an internationally known American sportsman, author, photographer and television personality who hosted ABC's The American Sportsman series from 1966 to 1979. Gresham, who resided on the historic Cane River Lake in Natchitoches, the oldest city in Louisiana, traveled throughout the globe, particularly South America and Africa, to engage in hunting, fishing and shooting with various American celebrities. He was a champion of the environment and conservation, the subject of his graduate school thesis.

The group looks to preserve North America's outdoor heritage of hunting and fishing through public education and advocacy. Backcountry Hunters & Anglers works to prevent the development of wild land in North America and follows the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation as a basis for its positions.
Sports Afield Trophy Properties, formerly Cabela's Trophy Properties, LLC. is an independent real estate listing subsidiary of Sports Afield, an outdoors magazine. It was founded as Cabela's Trophy Properties, LLC by Cabela's, American specialty retailer of outdoor merchandise. Cabela's sold the service to Sports Afield in 2014.
'Enos Bradner's book on steelhead fishing was the first outdoor book I ever read,' says Lewis. 'The Enos Bradner Award is meaningful to me because his writing inspired me to become a steelhead fisherman, which in turn animated a love for the outdoors'.
