Gary Rush Purdy CM (born October 8,1936) is a Canadian materials scientist and engineer. He is a Distinguished University Professor at McMaster University.
Purdy was born on October 8,1936,in Edmonton,Alberta,Canada. [1] He was born to father Kent Purdy and graduated from McKay Avenue and Victoria Composite High schools. [2] Following high school,he earned his bachelor's degree in mining engineering and his master's degree in metallurgy from the University of Alberta (U of A). [3] During his time at the U of A,he won the Robert Tegler Scholarship from 1957 to 1958 and a National Research Council studentship from 1958 to 1959. Upon graduating from U of A,Purdy attended McMaster University where he won another National Research Council studentship. [4]
Following his PhD,Purdy joined the faculty at McMaster University in 1963. [3] As a professor,he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1991. [5] Following his election,he was also inducted into McMaster’s Alumni Gallery. [6] In 2002,his "contributions towards the understanding of diffusion and phase transformations in materials," earned him an election to the Minerals,Metals &Materials Society. [3] The following year,Purdy was also inducted into the National Academy of Engineering for "pioneering theoretical and experimental studies of chemical and structural effects on phase transformations and of interfacial diffusion-induced phenomena." [7]
He was appointed to the Order of Canada in June 2023. [8]
Purdy married nurse Ruby Elinore Smith in 1961 [9] and they had their first child in 1962. [10]

Guion Stewart Bluford Jr. is an American aerospace engineer,retired United States Air Force (USAF) officer and fighter pilot,and former NASA astronaut,in which capacity he became the first African American to go to space. While assigned to NASA,he remained a USAF officer rising to the rank of colonel. He participated in four Space Shuttle flights between 1983 and 1992. In 1983,as a member of the crew of the Orbiter Challenger on the mission STS-8,he became the first African American in space as well as the second person of African descent in space,after Cuban cosmonaut Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez.

Sam Oboh is the first Canadian of African descent to be elected as president of this Canadian Royal Institute - a feat that the erstwhile director of the Institute of African Studies at Carleton University - Ottawa,the late professor Pius Adesanmi described as "a history-making event on many fronts." In 2021,at the Rio General Assembly,Oboh was elected as the Vice President for Region 3 of the Paris-based International Union of Architects (UIA) - a body recognized by the United Nations,working to unify architects,influence public policies,and advance architecture to serve the needs of society. Oboh was elevated to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects at an investiture ceremony held in New York on June 22,2018. The citation read at the investiture ceremony noted that "Oboh exemplifies the ideals of stewardship excellence by intensifying public advocacy - inspiring diversity,promoting good design and championing transformative initiatives for public good." With his investiture,Oboh qualified to use the FAIA designation. Only about 3% of architects in the United States of America have this unique distinction.
