Gavin Rajah is a South African born fashion and interior designer. He was born in Durban and spent his childhood there. He is the founder of Gavin Rajah Atelier and The Whitelight Movement, an organization that does skills training and work placement with women who are survivors of sexual abuse and/or domestic violence. Rajah is also known for his work in events, particularly those of an educational or philanthropic nature.

Career

Gavin Rajah initially studied law at the University of Cape Town beginning in 1989. While at university he sold reject clothing from the United States clothing label his father represented. Anti-apartheid sanctions saw an end to the American label selling in South Africa and Gavin Rajah then befriended a local seamstress whose clothes he began selling.

Rajah gave up law to focus on fashion. The release of Nelson Mandela from prison on February 11, 1991 and the unbanning of political organizations led to rapid relaxations on business ownership for black South Africans. Rajah assisted Mandela with fundraising events for the opening of the Mandela Children’s Fund offices in the United Kingdom and United States of America, as well as sites in South Africa. Gavin Rajah founded Cape Town Fashion Week in 2000 [2] and became the first African brand to be invited by the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture in France to show at Paris Fashion Week (Couture) in 2006. He partners with the Motsepe Family Foundation [3] to promote the development of young black fashion designers and entrepreneurs in South Africa and other African nations. He also works with major South African retailer, Pick ’n Pay on a mentorship program for young black designers. [4] He worked with South Africa’s Special Envoy for Gender, Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi [5] to develop a skill transfer and micro-enterprise network in the clothing and textile sector in Africa. He has shown collections in New York, Paris, Germany, the United Kingdom and India.

In recent years he has extended design to homewear often drawing on the skills of famous African artists, [6] including his collaboration with Zanele Muholi. [7]

Philanthropy

A board member of the Harvard University Center for Africa [8] since August 2016, he helped the Center launch an African office in Johannesburg, South Africa. He has worked with the Center in organizing and fundraising for four conferences on: Africa’s Leaders Speak [9] (2018; Africa-Asia Partnerships in Health and Healthcare Delivery for Women and Youth [10] (2019; Women and the Changing Face of Entrepreneurship in Africa [11] (2020); and Future of Curatorial Practice in Africa [12] (2022). He is a director of the African Womxn Award in association with the Harvard Center for Africa and is an advisory member on Harvard Art’s Initiative.

Gavin Rajah has been an active United Nations [13] Children’s Fund Goodwill Ambassador [14] since 2017. [15] In 2018, he founded The White Light Movement, [16] a non-profit organization [17] in South Africa that helps women and girls harmed by domestic violence and/or sexual abuse. [18] [19]

The first restaurant was opened at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town in 1996. The franchise was bought by Famous Brands in 2009.

South African Car of the Year

The South African Car of the Year is an annual Car of the Year award organised by the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists. The award process is widely regarded for its attention to depth and detail. The vehicles that are selected as finalists are thoroughly tested and driven for a number of days by the journalists before the winner is chosen based upon the journalist's scores.

Theo Sowa CBE is a Ghanaian-born independent adviser working on a wide range of international issues with a focus on social development issues and has spoken publicly on a number of socio-political issues. She has worked with a number of organisations including UNICEF, Stephen Lewis Foundation, the African Union, DfID, and UNDP, among others and is currently CEO of the African Women's Development Fund. Her work has included working with Graça Machel on issues pertaining to the youth as well as contributing and editing a number of publications. She is also a trustee of Comic Relief. In June 2010, Sowa was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).

Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa, is a South African actress, TV presenter and fashion designer. She is known for her breakthrough role on the South African Television Series, Tshisa. She launched the maternity wear range SE Preggoz in South Africa and New York in 2015.

The 2021 South African municipal elections were held on 1 November 2021, to elect councils for all district, metropolitan and local municipalities in each of the country's nine provinces. It is the sixth municipal election held in South Africa since the end of apartheid in 1994, held every five years. The previous municipal elections were held in 2016. On 21 April 2021, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the elections will be held on Wednesday, 27 October 2021. It had been recommend by Dikgang Moseneke to delay the municipal elections until 2022. The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) requested the Constitutional Court to support the date postponement. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) supported the date postponement while the Democratic Alliance (DA) was against the postponement of the date. The Constitutional Court dismissed the application to postpone the date until 2022, ruling that they had to take place between 27 October and 1 November. On 9 September 2021, the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma announced that the elections would be held on 1 November.

Nobel Square is a public square in the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront neighborhood of Cape Town, South Africa. It opened in December 2005 and includes sculptures of the country's four Nobel Peace Prize winners, Albert Lutuli, Desmond Tutu, F. W. de Klerk, and Nelson Mandela. The square was the brainchild of Ebrahim Rasool, Premier of Western Cape from 2004 to 2008, and his predecessor Marthinus van Schalkwyk. Supported by the government of the Western Cape, the project was launched after consultations with Lutuli's family and the still-living Prize winners, who attended the unveiling with Lutuli's daughter and the Norwegian Ambassador to South Africa. The statues, slightly taller than the four people depicted, are arranged in a semicircle with their backs to Table Mountain. Quotes of each figure are inscribed on the ground in front of them. A fifth sculpture, entitled "Peace and Democracy," represents the role of women and children in the anti-apartheid movement. All five sculptures are bronze and stand on a 386-m2 granite surface. A competition invited ten artists from around South Africa to submit proposals, with Claudette Schreuders's entry inspiring the four sculptures of Nobel winners and Noria Mabasa's idea selected for "Peace and Democracy."

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies FC is a women's professional soccer club from Pretoria, South Africa. Its competes in the SAFA Women's League the top tier women's football league in South Africa. They are the joint most successful team in South African woman's league with three titles. The team, together with the men's team is owned by Patrice Motsepe. They enjoy a strong relationship with their male counterparts as both are the same club with two different branches.

MM Platinum is a South African football club based in Westbury, Johannesburg that plays in the National First Division.
