The Philstage Awards for the Performing Arts, more commonly known as the Gawad Buhay, are awards presented annually by Philstage, an organization of performing arts companies in the Philippines, at the National Theater in the Cultural Center of the Philippines to recognize outstanding performance in Philippine theater. [1] First awarded in 2009, they are considered as the highest award in performing arts in the Philippines. [2]

The Philstage, officially known as the Philippine Legitimate Stage Artists Group, was established in 1997 by eight theater companies: Ballet Manila, Gantimpala Theater, Musical Theatre Philippines, Organisasyong Pilipinong Mang-aawit, Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA), Repertory Philippines, Tanghalang Pilipino and Trumpets. It is the only nationally recognized organization for performing arts in the Philippines. Its primary mission was to promote the performing arts industry in the country, lobbying laws and policies that protects professionals. [3] [4]

One of the requirement for a company to join Philstage is to have staged at least three productions, and be in existence for at least three years. There are nine members currently. These are six of the eight founding companies, 9 Works Theatrical, Ballet Philippines, Full House Theater Company, The Necessary Theatre, Philippine Ballet Theatre, Philippine Opera Company, Stages, and Red Turnip Theater. In 2008, Philstage established Gawad Buhay, becoming the country's first and only industry awards in theater. The first edition was held on February 18, 2009 at the Aurelio Tolentino Theater of the Tanghalang Pambansa. The award also publishes citations every quarter, where the jury selects the final nominees for annual Gawad Buhay awards ceremony which is usually held in April.

Zsazsa Zaturnnah is a fictional comic book superheroine created by Filipino illustrator and graphic designer Carlo Vergara. The character first appeared in the Filipino graphic novel, Ang Kagila-gilalas na Pakikipagsapalaran ni Zsazsa Zaturnnah, originally a self-published work in December 2002 consisting of two parts. The company weaves into its work the theatrical traditions of the university's sesquicentennial past: the devotion of the salon de actos at the Escuela Municipal, the eloquence of the Ateneo Dramatics Guild, the joie de vivre of the Ateneo Players Theater, and the innovative spirit of the Ateneo Experimental Theater. Like these companies, Tanghalang Ateneo uses theater to foster eloquentia, sapientia, and humanitas – the pillars of Jesuit pedagogy. It sees itself as a theater company in the service of student formation, and by extension – given the Jesuit ideal of magis – a theater in service of the nation.

The Cultural Center of the Philippines Foundation, Inc. is a government-owned and controlled corporation established to preserve, develop and promote arts and culture in the Philippines. The CCP was established through Executive Order No. 30 s. 1966 by President Ferdinand Marcos. Although an independent institution of the Philippine government, it receives an annual subsidy and is placed under the National Commission for Culture and the Arts for purposes of policy coordination. The CCP is headed by an 11-member Board of Trustees, currently headed by Chairperson Margarita Moran-Floirendo. Its current president is Arsenio Lizaso.

Lisa Teresita Pacheco Macuja-Elizalde is a Filipino prima ballerina. In 1984, she became the first foreign soloist to ever join the Kirov Ballet. In the Philippines, she is the Artistic Director and CEO of Ballet Manila and was the Vice-Chairman of the Philippine UNESCO National Commission. She was also the Commissioner of the National Commission on the Role of Filipino Women. Macuja-Elizalde is also Directress and faculty member of the Lisa Macuja School of Ballet – a training center for ballet professionals who are steeped in the Russian Vaganova method. She is also the founder of Project Ballet Futures (PBF) - an internationally recognized community scholarship program that provides training and performance opportunities for deserving public school students.

Vincent Abenojar De Jesus is a Filipino composer, librettist, musical scorer, and musical director for theater, television, and film. He is also a writer, lyricist, actor, singer, and educator. He attended the University of the Philippines Diliman College of Music, and majored in piano and voice. He was a member of the Philippine Educational Theater Association from 1983 to 2020.

Jennifer Rose Olayvar is a ballerina from the Republic of the Philippines. She was a dancer for Ballet Manila from 2000 to 2013. She became the Special Assistant to Lisa Macuja-Elizalde from 2004 to 2007. Olayvar has taken minor and intermediate examinations for the Royal Academy of Dance London.

Walang Sugat is an 1898 Tagalog-language zarzuela written by Filipino playwright Severino Reyes. The music for the original version of the play was written by Filipino composer Fulgencio Tolentino. Walang Sugat was written when the zarzuela became a "potent means" of expressing Filipino nationalism during the Spanish Occupation of the Philippines that followed three centuries of Spanish rule.
