Gaya Emirate

Gaya Emirate is a second-class emirate in Kano State, Nigeria. It was first established by the Kano State Government in 2019, and restructured in 2024 following a brief dissolution. It is located in the Gaya Local Government Area of the state. [1] [2] [3]

The Gaya Emirate is headed by a traditional ruler known as the Sarkin Gaya, who is appointed by the Kano State Government. The current Sarkin Gaya is Aliyu Ibrahim Gaya, [4] [5] who was appointed in 2021 after the death of late emir Alhaji Ibrahim Abdulkadir. The emirate is predominantly a farming community, with crops such as rice, maize, millet, and groundnuts being grown in large quantities. [6] [7]

Culture

In terms of culture and traditions, the Gaya people have a rich heritage and are known for their colorful festivals such as Durbur of Hawan Sallah and traditional dances. One of the major festivals in the emirate is the Gada, which is celebrated annually and involves the display of traditional wrestling, archery, and other cultural activities. [8] [9]

Dissolution and re-establishment

On May 23, 2023, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State announced the dissolution of the Gaya Emirate, along with four other emirates created in 2019 by the administration of former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. This decision reestablished Kano State's traditional structure of a single emirate, as it was prior to the 2019 reorganization. [10] [11]

The abolishment merged the areas under the Gaya Emirate back into the Kano Emirate, aiming to restore historical continuity and improve administrative efficiency. On the same day, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II was installed as the Emir of Kano, assuming leadership over the newly consolidated Kano Emirate. This change was intended to unify the traditional leadership and streamline governance within the state. [12] [13]

In July of 2024, Gaya Emirate was re-established as a second-class emirate under the authority of the Kano Emirate. Gaya consists of the Gaya, Albasu and Ajingi local government areas. [3]

Muhammadu Sanusi II, ; born 31 July 1961), known by the religious title Khalifa Sanusi II, is the spiritual leader (khalifa) of the Tijanniyah Sufi order in Nigeria and the emir of the ancient city-state of Kano. He is a member of the Dabo dynasty and the grandson of Muhammadu Sanusi I. He succeeded his great-uncle Ado Bayero to the throne on 8 June 2014, assuming the regnal name Muhammadu Sanusi II. He spent most of his reign advocating for cultural reform in Northern Nigeria. In 2020, he was deposed by Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and was succeeded by his cousin Aminu Ado Bayero. On 23 May 2024, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf reinstated him.

Alhaji Sir Muhammadu Sanusi I KBE was the Acting Governor of Northern Nigeria (1957) and Emir of Kano from 1954 to 1963. He was the eldest son of Emir Abdullahi Bayero. He was a powerful Emir that had substantial influence in the colonial Northern Nigeria. He hosted a grand durbar festival for Elizabeth II when she visited Kano in 1956. The power tussle between him and his distant cousin Sir Ahmadu Bello the Sardauna of Sokoto and accusations of financial malfeasance led to his abdication, and subsequent self-exile in Azare 1963. His grandson, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria reigned as Emir of Kano from 2014 to 2020, was dethroned by the state government in 2020 then reinstated on 24th May 2024 by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. Sanusi belonged to the reformed Tijaniyya order of Ibrahim Niass.

Rano Emirate is a second-class emirate located in Kano State, Nigeria in 2019. It is also one of the oldest settlements in Northern Nigeria, dating back to the 6th century AD. Rano Emirate has a rich and diverse cultural heritage, with historical monuments such as rocks, walls, and palaces. Rano Emirate has historically been part of the Kano Emirate, which was a Muslim state that emerged from the Fulani jihad in the early 19th century. Rano Emirate has had three ruling dynasties: the Kwararrafawa, the Habe, and the Fulani.

Aliyu Ibrahim Gaya is the current Emir of Gaya, one of the four new Emirates created by Governor Ganduje's administration in 2019. He was appointed by the Kano State Government on September 26, 2021, following the death of his father, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdulkadir, who was the first Emir of Gaya. Ibrahim Aliyu was the Chiroman Gaya, a titleholder, before his ascension to the throne. He is the head of the Gaya Emirate. He is also a member of the Kano State Council of Emirs, which advises the Governor on matters of traditional administration and security.
